Names drawn for 11 Porter Creek land lots

With 24 applications coming into the city's first land lottery, more than double the number of lots available would have been needed for everyone who put their name in to get a piece of property.

With 24 applications coming into the city's first land lottery, more than double the number of lots available would have been needed for everyone who put their name in to get a piece of property.

On Monday afternoon, city officials drew the winning names for the 11 single-family lots available in Porter Creek in the city's first-ever land lottery .

Ten of the lots were available in the new Stan McCowan subdivision (on the site of the former Stan McCowan arena) off Sycamore Street.

The other property is at 1 Boxwood Cres. on the corner of Clyde Wann Road.

While there were more applicants than land available, Pat Ross, the city's land development supervisor, said this morning that in the grand scheme of things, the number of applicants wasn't too significant.

"Seven were solely interested in the Boxwood site," Ross said.

The city opted to make the 1,000-square-metre Boxwood Crescent property available earlier this year with the site already being properly zoned and designated for a single-family or duplex home.

In Monday's lottery, Earl Wood's name came up as the lucky purchaser of the highly sought-after property, with a price of $126,000 including the GST.

Development cost charges will run Wood and other property owners $2,500 for a single-family home or $4,000 for a duplex.

With seven applicants going after the Boxwood Crescent property, that left 17 in the drawing for the 10 new Stan McCowan Place single-family properties.

The names drawn for the three properties that are large enough to have either a single-family home or duplex include (with prices including the GST):

  • Janet Spinks for 35 Stan McCowan Place, priced at $116,550 for 968 square metres;

  • Jonathan Spinks for 32 Stan McCowan Place, priced at $135,450 for 0.112 hectares; and

  • Danita Organ for 36 Stan McCowan Place, priced at $154,350 for 0.127 hectares.

Other names drawn for single-family home properties in the new neighbourhood include:

  • Wanda Kuba for the 621-square metre 2 Stan McCowan Place, at $84,000;

  • Larry Organ for the 555-square metre 10 Stan McCowan Place, at $74,550;

  • Wanda Organ for the 585-square metre 26 Stan McCowan Place, at $74,550;

  • Mathieu Smits for the 555-square metre 6 Stan McCowan Place, at $74,550;

  • Cornelis Smits for the 555-square metre 22 Stan McCowan Place, at 74,550;

  • Robert Milligan for the 555-square metre 14 Stan McCowan Place, at 74,550; and

  • Bernard Isaacs for the 555-square metre 18 Stan McCowan Place, at $74,550.

Ross pointed out some of those who weren't successful in getting a lot may end up with one if some are turned back. The city has a standby list for such cases.

While the single-family lots have been awarded, Oct. 10 will see bids opened for the multi-family and townhouse sites in the new neighbourhood.
