PROBLEM DISAPPEARS – This older mobile was left without explanation at the Copperbelt Railway and Mining Museum’s property.

Mysterious mobile home vanishes from museum

And just like that, it was gone.

By Stephanie Waddell on November 14, 2016

And just like that, it was gone.

Sometime over the weekend, an older mobile home that had been dropped at the Copperbelt Railway and Mining Museum’s property off the Alaska Highway, just south of McIntyre Creek, disappeared from the property.

Some tires had also been left next to the mobile home in the middle of the driveway on the property.

Museum officials will dispose of them at the city’s landfill, Angela Drainville, executive director of the Miles Canyon Railway Society, said today.

The group operates the museum and the waterfront trolley, both of which are only open through the summer.

Drainville said that a couple of days after the trailer was left at the site, she took to a Buy & Sell site on Facebook to try to find the owner to take it away.

Someone claiming to be a friend of the trailer’s owner got back to the museum, indicating their anger that it had been posted to social media.

The person noted a tire had blown while the trailer was being hauled, so it was left there until they could get back to it, while others encouraged the museum to accept it as a gift.

Such a gift would be a significant cost to the museum to fix up, Drainville told the Star.

Even if it had been left as a donation, she said, there’s paperwork that has to be signed.

“We can’t even accept it,” she said.

This clearly wasn’t a case of a donation being left on the museum’s doorstep.

There have been a number of times, however, where artifacts have been left for the museum with no indication of where they are from.

That makes it next to impossible for the museum to take possession of such items and put them on display.

It’s an issue many museums have, Drainville said. She encourages anyone who wants to donate to a museum to get in touch with the museum first.

Drainville also contacted the city’s bylaw department about the trailer left on the property before it was removed over the weekend.

The incident makes a strong case for barricades to be put in place prohibiting access through the winter months when the facility is closed for the season, Drainville said.

Though barriers are being considered, Drainville said, a number of skiers, snowshoers and others use the site recreationally in the off-season, and she doesn’t want to limit access to those users.

Tough crowd with all those negative comments people. We are just trying to get through the winter and its colder out there if you have not noticed.

Things have worked out well for us and our trailer. We plan to cut it in two and build 2 tiny houses. We will keep one and sell the other. Thanks for your advice Josey.

Affordable housing is hard to find in Whitehorse. The City manager will meet with council to see if they will support us financially. We will build 2 tiny houses but will have to sell one at market value to someone who needs social housing. The city grant will cover $85,000 of the $ 90,000 needed to complete the work. The city apparently likes the concept of helping people out but it's usually established businesses like the owners of Baked who get these types of deals all the time.

Hey Stu...why are you asking regular folks for donations in town?
That is so, so 1970's, there are better ways.
In today's Whitehorse just go see the nobles at city hall, they certainly have heaps of our assets they would give you...makes them all warm and fuzzy. Failing that, they will most likely help you tap into the keg of cash...give you a grant for a Eco stove that runs on love.
Yes I understand your request was humour, so too was this.
Too bad the fire truck was spoken for, it could tow.

No worries, we'll drag it to the Walmark Parking lot for the winter.
Does anyone have a old barrel wood stove and few sections of pipe they want to give away?

What is the matter with you people? A junked up trailer was dumped at the entrance to the Copperbelt Museum and you actually think that it was Ok for it to stay there? Would your redneck remarks and derogatory comments be received with the same bandwagon mentality if said trailer was dumped at the McBride or any other museum in this city? As for the personal attack on Ms. Drainville, perhaps you should look before you leap.Your beloved trailer is now dumped at a government owned parking lot within the city right behind sign that clearly states "No dumping,no littering",etc. If the powers that be insist that this trailer be removed, who will you attack then? Put away your claws and use your energy for civic pride instead of personal attacks on someone that is trying their best to preserve and protect the history of this place, not trash it.

Sorry, we blew a tire and now the bearings are shot. Will leave it in a public space until spring. Just do not have enough cash to make it happen right now.
If anyone wants to donate there will be a gofundme site set up.

You mean someone left it there without a leaving it here a spell permit?
No flat tire permit? No parking permit? No permits at all.... Gee the humanity of it all.
Anyone else notice the wage drawing special interest Drainville rep. irony.
Seems we have many special interests who create wages based on their interests being special.
Kinda morphed this place into a Drainville of any income one thought was...disposable.
Maybe it was just a taxpayer that felt they funded them for decades, might as well park there too.
...if not for a wee spell before everyone got their panties in a twist.
I guess there are no unsolved murders in town, solid economy feeding off others, all the TFW citizen lotteries for SIN's are wrapped up so....
Let's run this stop the presses capitivating sit on the edge of your seat expose article as...nothing to see here...in Drainville.

OMG!!! As soon as something happens (which may never happen again); we are putting up a barricade. Are we acting paranoid or what?

The trailer is by the Transit building across the street from the Mae Bacher Animal Shelter. Someone literally put it in the ditch. I drove by it today thinking "Why is that trailer in the ditch outside the Transit building?"

What is the purpose of this article? Front page none the less..!
Slow day at the news room?
It is pretty clear what happened to the unit, you can even see the flat tire in the picture. It was never "dropped off". Ms. Drainville is delusional .
Get over it and move on.
