Spectators packed the gallery in courtroom number five this morning to see Alicia Murphy's second court appearance since being charged with second-degree murder.

Murphy, a 28-year-old Whitehorse woman, was charged in relation to an incident that occurred on June 22, when a body was located on the banks of the Yukon River near the Roundhouse.

The victim has been identified as Evangeline Billy, 27, of Carmacks.

Murphy was escorted into the defendant's box by a female RCMP officer, where she remained seated during the court proceedings.

She was wearing plain dark clothing and appeared composed.

Territorial court judge Mike Cozens presided, with David McWhinnie appearing for the Crown and Nils Clarke representing the defence.

No plea has been entered. The case was adjourned until Aug. 1 so that counsel can be confirmed.

Clarke said the RCMP are still "actively investigating" the case and that more information must be collected before the case can move forward.

Murphy gave a small wave as she was escorted out of the courtroom. She remains in custody.

The packed courtroom quickly emptied after the accused's brief appearance.

In the case's court file, four individuals with whom Murphy cannot have any contact are identified.

The file also says evidence connected with the case is banned from publication.
