MRI campaign fund-raisers reach their objective early

The Yukon Hospital Foundation expects to reach its $2-million Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) fund-raising goal by the end of the month.

The Yukon Hospital Foundation expects to reach its $2-million Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) fund-raising goal by the end of the month.

Combined with the $2 million in government funds presented during the weekend's Alkan Air Grand Ball by Premier Darrell Pasloski, the foundation has enough to move ahead with the purchase, president Krista Prochazka said in an interview today.

The government committed to match the foundation's $2 million two years ago when the fund-raising campaign launched.

Prochazka said hospital staff attended an MRI trade show last week and have made recommendations regarding which machine to purchase.

"There's over 500 Yukoners going south a year to get an MRI and for non-critical MRIs, they're waiting an average of six months, so having one in the territory will reduce that to just a few weeks,” she said.

"It will eliminate the burden of having to go away from family and work for several days for a 15-minute test.”

The MRI will also benefit the territory in terms of staff recruitment, Prochazka said.

Medical staff do look at what equipment and services a hospital can offer when choosing where to practice, she noted.

Donations are still coming in for the machine, including from Yukon College's Movember funds.

The college raised more than $2,000 during Movember, most of which will be donated to the MRI fund.

Funds from Northwestel Inc.'s Festival of Trees fund-raiser, on now at the government's main administrative building, will also be directed to the purchase and implementation of an MRI program.

"It's extraordinary how Yukoners have come together to make this happen,” Prochazka said.

Pasloski briefed the legislature on the campaign this afternoon, thanking the foundation's fund-raising efforts and praising the fact it took just two years of the planned four-year campaign to reach the objective.

This article was about the MRI machine for the Yukon. I am sorry folks commenting have turned it into a judgement on health care.

Personally, I am happy to see some donations not only staying in the country..but staying in the Yukon to benefit us all.. I am a pensioner on the edge of surviving, but I managed to come up with a few dollars myself..I like being able to say I helped pay for it.. If early diagnosis saves one life, it will have been worth it.

As for quality of care.. The care Yukoner's receive is not due to the government, it is due to the medical staff that have chosen to live and make their homes here and provide a level of care that could set the bar for any community in the country.

Shenya and Dorothy

If I could give you a thousand thumbs up, I would. It is amazing the level of health care we receive in the Yukon. There are some minor problems, and there always will be....but we have it pretty damn good!

I can't believe my eyes when I look at the comments posted. We should be thankful that we have a business community that donates towards worthwhile things like medical equipment. Most of the business community that made this happen are mining companies or mining related. I say thank you to all that has made the MRI happen. That includes our government. What a gift we have received. Folks in Whitehorse can you not just be thankful on one item. You all sound like spoiled children. I know the weather has been miserable but come on where is this Yukon spirit.

Merry Christmas to all

A lot of people just move here because of the healthcare. Hardly a legitimate reason to emigrate. Medical tourism? Lol. Mr Pasloski took the words out of my mouth. It is and always just been about one thing, MONEY. Here's a honest question to the online readers here. Do you have an ailment that doctors can't seem to diagnose? Do you go for test after test after test? And they still don't know? More tests mister, lol. A cured person is a person that doesn't need any tests. MONEY. That last prescription giving you side effects? Oops, better go get another test to make sure the pills aren't screwing up your kidneys. MONEY. CEOS of hospitals, what kind of wage do they make again? It's safe to the majority of us folks won't make $300k/year in our lifetimes. MONEY. What other industry has those types of wages? Banks. MONEY. I personally don't trust banks.

Normally, the MRI would be located at the hospital.

It is amazing to have caring people to take on fundraising efforts for a very needed cause.

Today we have a mammography and CT scan where in the past we traveled to either Edmonton or Vancouver-very stressful especially for people who are in difficult health situation or have painful experiences. Often one does not have a family member to accompany them for support. MRI's take at least 45 mins to 1 hr. It is one good thing to finally be able to have an MRI, the next step-to recruit the technician.

GOLD to those who make great effort in making it possible to have an MRI.

Will the funding raised also provide for the salary for the techs to operate the MRI? Considering that the hospital cannot hire and/or keep a chemo therapy nurse, threatening to shut down this vital service, I wonder if this will be another unfulfilled service?

Could someone enlighten me as to where the MRI will be located? Has our government kept the site a secret or will we be donating now for 2 years towards building a home for the MRI? Congratulations to ALL that have donated to this very worthy cause. As Yukon grows its the population that seems to know when, where, how and why to pledge their funds. Mr. Premier time for some clarity on this issue for all of us!

Why don't they just go get more loans? When our tax dollars go to healthcare, why do these hospitals go to the public for money? Why does a hospital have a CEO? Because the only thing in healthcare that resembles health is the word "health"care. Its a business plain and simple. And people trust their lives with an entity that puts profits over people. Just like the entire industry. Truth hurts doesn't it?
