MP hopeful PM’s apology will be helpful

(Revised) Yukon MP Larry Bagnell says he hopes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s apology for wearing blackface on several occasions

By Gabrielle Plonka on September 19, 2019

Yukon MP Larry Bagnell says he hopes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s apology for wearing blackface on several occasions will be the first step in the Liberal party’s ongoing commitment to fight racism.

“It’s a very unfortunate incident,” Bagnell told the Star Thursday.

“He (Trudeau) took responsibility (Wednesday) night, he made a very long apology, said it was totally unacceptable and denounced his own actions.

“I hope that it’s very helpful to anyone who may have been offended by those pictures.”

Trudeau also held a lengthy news conference in Winnipeg shortly after Bagnell spoke, repeatedly apologizing for his actions of many years ago.

On Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, several photos depicting Trudeau in blackface were publicized.

The first instance, published by Time Magazine Wednesday afternoon, shows a 29-year-old Trudeau dressed as Aladdin with face, neck and hands painted brown.

The photo was taken at an “Arabian Nights”-themed gala at the Vancouver private high school where he taught in 2001.

Since the initial photograph came to light, two more instances of Trudeau painting his face with dark make-up have emerged.

Trudeau admitted to the second instance during an apology Wednesday night, explaining that he had darkened his face for a high school talent show performance of the song Day-O.

The third instance, obtained by Global News Thursday morning, is a video of Trudeau in blackface some time in the early 1990s. He is seen in dark make-up, a white T-shirt and ripped jeans. He is waving his hands and laughing in the video.

Trudeau stated he “deeply regrets this mistake” during the news conference in Winnipeg.

He added he should have recognized the racist history behind blackface, but was ignorant of it thanks to his “layers of privilege.”

Bagnell told the Star he believes the incident, which is receiving intense international attention, will inspire the Liberal leader to work “even harder” to reduce racism in Canada.

“I think he said this certainly wasn’t the end,” Bagnell said.

“He’ll be especially cognizant now to work on it harder, and even more in the coming years to be sensitive and to fight racism, and that’s the right thing to do.”

Bagnell said he hasn’t been approached by Yukoners to respond to the incident since the news broke.

He would not comment on whether he believes the scandal will negatively affect his campaign.

“I just carry on, doing what I think is right, being honest and trying to do the right thing and let the people decide,” he said.

Bagnell added he hopes the incident will serve as a lesson to all Canadians.

“We have to try to be sensitive to the things we do, and how they might affect other people,” he said. “If you think a little deeper, you might change something you’re going to do, because you realize it might be offensive even though at first glance, you don’t think it’s going to be offensive.”

I own an AR. Do I hunt with it? No, but It's a neat piece in my collection and I like it. I'm not going to shoot anybody with it and neither is anybody else. What harm is there in me, a responsible, law abiding gun owner, owning something I enjoy?

Like the other guy said, there are non-restricted semi-auto guns that unleash more firepower. It's just black and scary looking to non-gun people and therefore vilified.

Mr. slanted facts, you provide so called facts, but no answers. What is it you so call hunt with these so called animals?
I will say it again, I see no reason for semi auto weapons for hunting, if you are using them to hunt, you are not hunting.

one more try with the facts on Sep 24, 2019 at 4:32 pm

There are only a handful of people in Canada who can legally own fully auto and converted auto firearms.
Their PAL license has special endorsement 12.2 and 12.3, no one else can legally buy or even inherit them. So relax once the owner of those automatic firearms die, the guns will be destroyed.
Check this link for classification:
http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/prohibited-prohibe-eng.htm

For the umpteenth time. The AR15 is not an assault rifle, it is a gas operated, semi auto fire arm that usually is chambered in .223/5.56mm. It is a gopher gun at best. It is illegal to shoot big game with such a small caliber. Again, it is semi auto, just like the Mini-14 which is non restricted and is still used for shooting varmints, etc.

Sensationalizing a gun and calling it an assault rifle is fear mongering of the uneducated masses.

I currently own non-restricted rifles such as the Tavor, CZ858, Norinco M305 (M14), all which get plenty of exercise outdoors, they are all the same (except for the caliber they shoot), all semi auto, all fine to use for hunting. Due to the whim of law makers my AR15 is a range only toy.

So once more and to simplify, the limited number of full auto's are already banned in Canada and owned by a few lucky individuals. The AR15 is a semi auto .223 rifle. Don't make it something it isn't.

This stupid proposed law will do ZERO to curb gang violence and gun crime. We are not Australia or the UK. We share a 9000km border with the largest gun manufacturer on the planet.

We need a "None Of The Above" option for this election. If they would insert it into election ballets and 30% of the votes are cast as "none " the election would be paused and the parties must present new leaders or lose their place on the ballet. This would probably be the outcome this election. Canada... we don't vote in a Guberment, we vote out the last ineffective one. This has to change. As it stands I am not a fan of ANY of the party leaders and think Canada can do better than the shysters and con men that are on the ballet currently.

We don’t need a gun ban, what we need is for the Liberal government to ensure the existing laws are enforced. The Liberals won’t come out and state that the real problem with shootings is the big city street gangs who are usually made up of ethnic demographics that are untouchable to left wingers.
Rather than deal with the real ethnic gang violence problem Trudeau wants to take an action that completely misses the point and say he did something. All those street gang bangers will surely stop shooting each other if the Liberals produce yet another piece of paper telling them not to, after all the law saying don’t shoot and kill each other is already heeded so well. This moron Trudeau definitely needs to be gone already!

@Red is the way to go..

No the gun ban is for AR15's and other semi auto box magazine fed firearms. This will include any and all "black guns" even non restricted one's I use and have used for hunting for 20+ years. FYI the AR15 is already a restricted firearm, treated same as a handgun, ie. from the vault to the range and back, a range only toy. Find me the statistics of how many times an AR15 was used to commit crimes in Canada, Bill Blair & Trudeau's fear mongering is idiotic but then what do you expect from a dictator?
Once again facts and education of our current gun laws will help you understand how this is a bad law.

@Chuck Farley,
The difference between Trudeau in black/brown face (3 times from what was found) and Harper in traditional head dress and paint is this;
Trudeau was and is an entitled narcissistic imbecile who thinks he can do no wrong and experiences it differently and his blackface episodes were in bad taste.

Comparing that to Harper who was honored by the Blood Tribe in Alberta and was given a ceremonial title shared by the likes of Prince Charles and Pope John Paul II — honorary chief of the Blood Tribe in southern Alberta. Head dress and war paint are all part of it.

Sorry Chuck but if you think being honored by a tribe and donning black face is the same thing you got bigger problem my friend.

The question is whether or not there's any benefit to apologize 72 times " That is a quote from Globe and Mail.. Trudeau has apologized for so much, AND drummed up some crocodile tears to go with it..that his words are useless now...

He was the only person at this party to wear black face, and not once or twice but 3 different times.. it was 30 years ago.. he STILL likes to play dressup and his 'this is insulting' chip seems to be missing. So what do we have here? The same thoughtless, insulting goof that we had 30 years ago. But, hopefully, will be finding another circus to be a clown in.

It must suck to be a Liberal MP right now. You know the party whips have distributed the approved talking points among them to defend the vacuous idiot Prime Minister. That must be a difficult thing to do - and I'm sure many of them are torn between speaking their own mind verses stooping to such levels to make excuses for a leader who continues to prove he is unworthy of the title let alone the role. Or they can demonstrate their own conscience and find a new job, which I suspect they will have to do after the Tallyman has counted up all the Canadian opinions in October. DAY-O!

Then the very next day Trudeau throws Larry, the Yukon and the rest of rural Canada under the bus in a desperate attempt to take the focus off his racist past by announcing a gun ban. It’s apparent Trudeau is now completely out of control and is desperately grasping at anything he can to try and get back some of the votes his exposed racism just cost him in Toronto. Trudeau’s Spectacular Implosion on Sep 20, 2019 at 6:52 am

Trudeau has just imploded in a spectacular fashion that no other Canadian PM has ever experienced before. Nixon’s Watergate scandal in early 1970’s USA may compare to this, but that wasn’t during an election campaign and at least Nixon resigned whereas Trudeau seems to be trying to bluff his way on. The international press as well as politicians worldwide are all over this, today even the left leaning New York Times ran a story about how Trudeau went from being Canada’s darling to an international pariah. As of Wednesday Trudeau has no credibility on the world stage and there’s no way he can continue to represent Canada. The CBC is reporting the Liberal parties candidate vetting team doesn’t know how this got past them when he originally ran as an MP and of course the campaign team is in full blown crisis mode. I just don’t think anyone knows what to do now in the midst of the election, something of this magnitude hasn’t happened before so there’s no parallel to fall back on. The easiest way out for everyone involved is for the voters to do their jobs and finish it.

Up 60 Down 18

Yukoner71 on Sep 20, 2019 at 5:39 am

There are several over riding questions that each potential Liberal voter needs to soul search and ask of themselves right now. Am I the the kind of person who can be a big enough hypocrite to go ahead and vote for Trudeau? Can I look in the mirror every day and be proud of what I did if I vote for Trudeau? How can I truly say that I’m against racism if I condone Trudeau’s repeated racist behaviour by voting for him?
Justin Trudeau is someone who built his entire public persona and reputation on supposedly being an enlightened 21st century politician completely different from the pack. It turns out he’s the same as everyone else, he just managed to successfully hide his dirty laundry for quite a while and is now begging for the forgiveness and benefit of the doubt that he’s never given to others. The Russian Daily News nailed it when they wrote of Trudeau, ‘One of the worlds leading virtue signallers has been proven a fraud’.
