MP criticized for skipping firearms law vote

By Palak Mangat on September 26, 2018

The Conservative candidate looking to be the Yukon’s next MP was on the offensive today, questioning why the current MP missed this week’s vote on the Liberal government’s controversial firearms bill.

That’s Bill C-71, which Yukon MP Larry Bagnell has maintained does not negatively impact firearms owners.

The proposed legislation could see enhanced background checks, more detailed record-keeping by vendors and new rules governing the transportation of firearms.

That means it could require retailers to keep records for two decades showing sales and inventory, extend background checks of those interested in firearms to their entire life rather than just the last five years, and examine their medical history for any signs of mental illness related to violent crimes.

Gun owners would also be subject to more stringent transfer processes: if passed, the only time it could be automatically transferred is when it takes place between the place of purchase, the owner’s home and shooting ranges.

For any other locations (like gun shows and repair shops), a prior approval would be needed.

A number of Yukoners, including the Yukon Fish and Game Association and the Yukon Party, have spoken out against the federal bill over the last number of months in particular. Some have said Bagnell has failed to stand up for Yukoners by supporting it.

Reached late this morning in Ottawa, Bagnell told the Star his decision to skip Monday’s vote on third reading of the bill was very much a conscious one.

“It was symbolic for the people that are still against the bill for whatever reason,” he said.

This past summer, he has been able to knock on doors and meet some who support the bill and others who do not.

“That bill is important because we won the battle, that it doesn’t hurt hunters and trappers,” Bagnell said. Noting that while he still supports it, the symbolic action of missing the vote was to show the no more than couple of dozen people that he’s heard their concerns too.

Bagnell’s comments come on the heels of Jonas Smith, who was acclaimed the Conservatives’ Yukon candidate in the 2019 federal election (see p. 3), criticizing him for missing the vote.

“I think he should have been present and voted one way or the other,” Smith said early this afternoon, likening it to Bagnell “shunning his duty.”

In a release, the Tory hopeful demanded an explanation from the MP.

“Yukoners need an MP who will stand up and vote for them,” he said.

Making that tough decision on the bill was a chance for Bagnell to “let Yukoners know where he stands on it, and he failed,” Smith said, adding he doesn’t buy the symbolic action “in the slightest.

“I think he’s shunning his duty as an elected official to avoid taking a stand and picking a side,” Smith told the Star, noting he is disappointed but not surprised.

“He is not showing the leadership that we elected him to (show),” Smith said, adding he has not spoken to Bagnell directly.

For his part, the MP said he is well aware of the criticism: “I know Jonas has always been keen on this.

“I went to a lot of doors and a few people that still didn’t understand that and appreciate that.

“But out of respect for those people, I purposely stayed away.”

The bill is on its way to the Senate now.

@Brian
Easy there big guy, your underpants might be too tight, your starting to get on a roll. Soon you'll run for an elected position, then you'll have to actually do some work, not that hunting and fishing could be confused for recreation.

@ Moose;
What other part of the population do you know, that willingly subjects to daily CPIC background checks? It's not a 'blanket' statement. Look up the percentages of crimes committed with a firearm by a legally licensed owner.

If you don't know the laws then please don't make silly comments or try to discredit something I've said.
FYI, This is what happens when you are a licensed firearms owner in Canada:

"Once a licence has been issued, background checks are ongoing through a process known as continuous eligibility. Daily checks of these police and court database are performed to determine if any new information (occurrence) is identified indicating that a licence holder may have become a public-safety risk. If concerns are identified, automatic notification is provided to the appropriate Chief Firearms Officer."

Source is halfway down the linked page:

So next time you're going to beak off about something you know obviously zero about, keep it to yourself.

Oops....sorry BnR got a wee bit confused and was...gasp...wrong, meant my post at yukoner56.
Please forgive my error, and carry on hating me for the other reasons you may.
Not certain if yukoner56 is a hater or indifferent to ol’ Josey...stay tuned?

Larry probably skipped the vote, after learning there was no buffet to feed from.
And BnR...using your “logic” in regards to voting habits?
Safe to say many tens of thousands after seeing the craziness outta Ottawa with Mr. Dress up....that they should and could vote team blue.
Seems being crazy and completely clueless is the new normal.
BnR....antigunner, or is it antifreedom or antiindependant though that fuels you?
I do not do group think...I anticipate your presumably vitriolic reply.

@Brian wow! You managed to tie in some negative thoughts about refugees in your pro-gun rant. You also brought up capital punishment. People like you are the reason good folks can't vote conservative. Any good ideas about firearms or something else is always overshadowed by the craziness that comes with it. Good god.

Firearm laws are already good enough.
Registering a firearm and storing it safe is what responsible owners do. In this urban society we have now with First Person Shooter video games the urbanites allow their 8 year olds to play is where the problem starts, that and Illegal weapons used by organized crime or refugee immigrants that jump the boarder and smuggle them back into our country.
If the Liberals actually wanted to save people, they would maybe make it more difficult to acquire a drivers license, yeah, more people die due to incompetent vehicle operators then do from guns in Canada.
I am a Commercial Trapper, Big Game guide, Fisherman, and provide food for my family from the forest floor. I work with my rifle loaded and on my back for 5-6 months of the year. It is a tool to me, a responsible firearms owner. From how I read the proposed legislation change, I would need to contact the RCMP when I leave my base camp and snowshoe 20km or so of trail checking my line. I am 100 miles from a community, how is that rational?
Go heavy on the criminals, bring back capital punishment. If more then 2 people or a video camera sees you shoot a cashier at a gas bar, then back up against the wall, say good bye.
These politicians are turning our country into a welfare state, people need to be held accountable for their actions.
Stop attacking responsible law abiding, contributing to society demograph.
For the city folk, hey, there are still people who live on the land, that moose my child eats adheres to your 100 mile diet. Please respect my way of life if you wish for me to respect yours.

@Alex "the most law abiding and vetted part of the population." You were actually making a point until you said that. Maybe hold back on the ridiculous impossible to prove blanket statements. Really takes away from anyone taking you seriously.

Larry failed on this one.

Firearms are serious items, they are not the same as buying a spoon or fork.
Businesses should keep and maintain sales records. Larry, you should have supported this.

The people who oppose, what's with that, what are you so afraid of?

He abstained (or napped through) the vote? "Send me to Ottawa and I will not stand up for any side on any issue!"

I think there is room with a nice view waiting for Larry next fall up at Whistle Bend place.

@treger,
and let's not forget the $3000+++ Swiss Arms rifles. One day I can shoot coyotes with it, the next it will be a prohib.
I can't stand Trudeau, Blair and all these other liberals who want to go after the most law abiding and vetted part of the population.

Bill C71 also prohibits the cz858 series of firearms effectively rendering useless peoples private property. It also removes government ability to step in and overrule firearms classifications made by the RCMP.

So to be clear, Larry decided to do nothing as a symbol for people who are against the bill. Wouldn't voting against the bill be a more effective method of demonstrating this? I'll never understand how these guys supposedly think.

Epic fail again on the firearm thing Larry. He needed to get out and talk to more Yukoners if he thinks that there is only a small handful that oppose Bill C-71. Time for him to retire.

The real issue in the bill it is very vague and leaves the government open to do what they want with gun the owner.
If you were bad in school and told someone off we will take your guns.
This bill is like total control of our people by government
