A Yukon man was medevaced to a Vancouver hospital after he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed in the dark hours of Saturday morning.
At approximately 2:30 a.m., Citizens on Patrol and RCMP spotted the 37-year-old motorcyclist driving erratically in downtown Whitehorse, and police later found the man travelling at a high speed up Two Mile Hill.
The motorcyclist then headed onto the Alaska Highway. As he entered the Kopper King Mini Mark, a marked police vehicle activated its emergency lights to pull him over.
Instead of complying with the traffic stop, police said Monday, the motorcyclist accelerated and fled south on the Alaska Highway.
The officers determined that the pursuit of the vehicle was not warranted at that time, deactivated their lights and alerted other patrol cars.
The officers then continued south on the highway. A short time later, they came upon a cloud of dust and proceeded to investigate.
The dust cloud was caused by the motorcyclist, who had lost control and was lying unconscious on the road. Emergency Medical Services personnel were called to the scene and took the injured man to Whitehorse General Hospital.
Due to the severity of his injuries, he was medevaced to a hospital in Vancouver.
Sgt. Don Rogers, the RCMP's spokesman, said the man had lost control of his vehicle, crossed the medium and was driving south in the northbound lane at the time of his crash.
Rogers said police suspected alcohol to be a factor and a blood warrant was executed.
Whitehorse RCMP and the M Division Traffic Analyst will continue their investigation, Rogers said.
The injured man's name is not being released.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it are asked to contact the Whitehorse detachment at 667-5555.

What an idiot. A complete disregard for the safety of himself, the police and anyone else on the road that night.
He deserves to be charged to the fullest extent of the law.
