A mother and son are in court after a man was stabbed in their Riverdale home in 2008.

Nearly two years after he was charged with stabbing his mother's ex-boyfriend, Douglas Allen is being tried for aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

His mother, Heather Allen, is being tried for assault and aiding and abetting an assault. Both Allens have pleaded not guilty.

In court Friday, Crown prosecutor Noel Sinclair played a DVD of an interview between Douglas and Whitehorse RCMP Const. Justin Fradette, who testified last week.

According to Douglas' statement in the video, some time in the early hours of Oct. 18, 2008, he came home from a walk to hear his mother yelling in her upstairs bedroom.

"Something just made my skin crawl,” Douglas said in the police DVD.

He said he believed his mother was in her bedroom with her ex-boyfriend, Allan Bullers, with whom she had a relationship for five years.

Sinclair described the relationship as "on again, off again,” and said Heather and Bullers had some difficulties throughout their years together.

Douglas may have had some pre-existing animosity toward Bullers on the night of the incident, Sinclair added.

Douglas said he was prepared to defend his mother. After he heard her screams, he grabbed the first item he saw – a knife to defend his mother. He then proceeded loudly up the stairs.

"I was just thinking it would be an intimidation factor,” he said about the knife.

When he reached the top of the stairs, Heather opened her bedroom door, fell crying to the floor, and told her son to "get him,” Douglas said.

He then went over to Bullers, who was sitting on the bed at the time, and kicked him in the chest area.

Douglas said Bullers wasn't fazed by the blow, got up and hit the then 18-year-old.

A fight ensued and Douglas said he ended up on the bed with Bullers on top of him and punching him in his face.

Throughout the event, Douglas was still carrying the knife in his hand.

At some point, he told Bullers he had a knife and he would stab Bullers if he didn't stop hitting him.

"I said cooly and calmly, ‘I got a knife. I will stab you,'” said Douglas.

Bullers didn't stop, so Douglas stabbed him in the back.

Following the incident, Bullers left the room and went outside, and someone called the police.

RCMP officers arrived and both Allens were arrested. Bullers was admitted to Whitehorse General Hospital and treated for his injuries.

Later, the RCMP executed a search warrant on the Allen residence and found a kitchen knife smeared with a substance later identified as Bullers' blood.

Yukon Supreme Court Justice Leigh Gower is hearing the case. The trial continued today.
