More trash dumped over the McIntyre Creek cliffs

The City of Whitehorse is reminding businesses and residents that illegal dumping is not acceptable anywhere in the city.

The City of Whitehorse is reminding businesses and residents that illegal dumping is not acceptable anywhere in the city.

“In recent weeks, trash was unfortunately dumped over the edge of the cliffs at McIntyre Creek, resulting in costly clean-up below the escarpment for Friends of McIntyre Creek,” the city said in a statement Friday

“The waste had to be airlifted using a helicopter with a net, from the creek bed up to Fish Lake Road. Parks crews assisted with the subsequent waste disposal.”

The city is recognizing volunteers from Ta’an Kwach’an Council, the Whitehorse Disc Golf Association, Friends of McIntyre Creek and Heli-Dynamics for their efforts.

“Many Whitehorse citizens and community organizations continuously work to stop illegal dumping such as this, together with city resources,” the city said.

“We thank these groups for their commitment to a cleaner and greener Whitehorse.”

Another form of illegal dumping is the dropping-off of unacceptable materials at the dump, the city added.

The facility, together with residential collection, costs approximately $2.8 million annually.

These services operate on a cost-recovery basis, which means these expenses are covered by user fees (tipping and collection fees).

Tipping fees pay for safe and proper management, recycling, transportation, and disposal of items.

On Boxing Day, there will be no tipping fees at the dump for self-hauled pickup loads of residential waste, including construction and demolition waste and bulky items. This excludes appliances, metals and e-waste.

Members of the public are asked to call the Trouble Line at 667-2111 to report illegal dumping.

I do not understand the tipping fee dogma. If you drive to Mt. Lorne or Marsh Lake there are no tipping fees and you can combine a nice country drive and perhaps a walk with waste removal and recycling.

@mary laker. Amazing how you managed to slip a totally unsubstantiated racist comment in there without any proof what so ever. After all we know that it's only the right wing white rich business owners who are the ones who can't afford to pay the tipping fees at the land fill. That's how they make their money. And I offered as much unsubstantiated evidence as you did. Stick to the facts you are willing to put in print!
BTW, did you ever report the incident or is that part of your unsubstantiated evidence!!!!!

I live outside of city limits and I have no problem paying for tipping fees at the landfill. It is a service provided by the City of Whitehorse that I am grateful they offer. I do have a problem with all the cheap garbage haulers who drive out into the surrounding areas of town and toss their junk into the bush to be rid of it.
I am now resolved to take pictures of the offenders when I witness them and provide this info to the Department of Environment to follow up. The dumber ones also leave discarded mail in their trash which has their mailing address printed there on. Government will be getting this material also.
The highway signs that say $1000 fine for littering are a joke. I have yet to hear in news of any form of anybody being charged with littering- it's long overdue.
This town has a bad case of broken windows theory, and nobody gives a damn.

I saw a well dressed woman, driving a red pick up truck, illegal dumping a few years back and stopped my vehicle to ask her what she was doing. When she ignored me and kept unloading her truck into the highway pullout, I told her what she was doing was not only illegal, but wrong, and that I was going to report her. She told me to mind my own business and was quite angry about being interrupted. Like it was 100% her right to do whatever she wanted. She was a member of a certain identifiable minority, who's name must not be mentioned unless you are talking about victimhood. So in the interests of having this posted, I won't mention it.

Anyway, just saying you might be wondering, "Who in their right mind would do something like this?!"
Someone like that well presented woman, that's who. You'd be surprised probably.

NO, they continuously work to PICK-UP after illegal dumping such as this. Nothing the volunteers are doing will stop it.
Mayor & Council could stop most of it by waiving tipping fees for residential waste. It appears they would rather see garbage pile up in the bush because their tipping fees pretend to make it 'sustainable'. Yet another brain fahrt from the CoW's Department of Sustainability Department.

Politico: Speak for yourself. I don't believe that many taxpayers want a tipping fee. Garbage collection should be paid out of current citizens taxes like they used to be. You say, if one doesn't use the system they don't have to pay. Well, that is exactly why so much garbage is being dumped outside the city dump - duhhh! And don't expect that to stop anytime soon.

"norht_of_60" So are you proposing a tax hike to pay for the lost dumping fees?
Or maybe a fee added to the cost of stuff sold in Whitehorse to cover the lost revenues? It's a user pay system, which tax payers want, so if you don't use it you don't have to pay for it. If you want you should put this before City Council. Then you'll have a chance to argue with the tax payers and see how popular your stance is.

Well now, what does the city expect. They charge taxpayers to bring their garbage to the dump and they don't expect this? I can imagine what the bushes look like now around Whitehorse. Mayor, don't expect it to get any better.

Drop the CoW tipping fees and a lot of this illegal dumping will stop both in and out of city limits. So will the insane amount of garbage that is being hauled out of city limits to our rural landfills that ends up being hauled back to Whitehorse anyways.

There should be no tipping fees at the dump for self-hauled pickup loads of residential waste, including construction and demolition waste EVERY weekend.
Illegal dumping increased when the CoW increased residential tipping fees.

Petty crime, drive by shootings, people driving on ski trails and now dumping trash in a beautiful area. What has become of our nice town?
