The Yukon government has released more details about a 48-unit mixed-income affordable housing project in Whitehorse.

Pauline Frost, the minister responsible for the Yukon Housing Corp. (YHC), announced the project March 14.

The venture is being called the first of its kind in the Yukon. It will provide safe and affordable homes for families and individuals, including vulnerable populations.

The proposed site at Fourth Avenue and Jeckell Street will support up to 48 units, depending on the design and layout.

A total of $18 million is budgeted for the project over the next three years. It includes planning and design, with the intent to begin construction in the spring of 2020.

A contract for the project planning and design will be issued this coming fiscal year.

This project is consistent with the goals and objectives of the Housing Action Plan for Yukon which is being implemented with community housing partners.

The YHC will engage the Housing Action Plan Implementation Committee and the local neighbourhood to ensure community needs are addressed.

“Our government is proud to be investing in a new multi-unit, mixed income housing project in Whitehorse,” Frost said Friday.

“Safe and affordable housing that meets the needs of families and individuals, particularly vulnerable populations, is a priority and a key component of healthy communities.

“This project will support Yukon’s economy, generate construction jobs and contribute to addressing the housing shortage.”

An allocation of $300,000 is dedicated for planning and design work in the 2019-20 budget tabled March 7.

This building will be designed for a diverse group of tenants with a range of income levels.

How is having a plan for 48 units 2 years from now addressing the housing shortage? According to the city and YG there are going to be at least 5,000 people a decade moving to Whitehorse, an average of 500 per year. We're already in a crisis. The city and YG should be working (with Kwanlin Dun and Ta'an) to open up like 3 new Whistlebend size areas. This is a basic economics issue. There is not enough supply to meet demand, so demand forces prices stupidly high. The governments need to open up land and let contractors and the free market fix this issue.
