Moose killed in collision

A bull moose was hit and killed by a car Friday night near Fox Lake.

The car was damaged but its occupants weren’t injured, conservation officer Ken Knutson said this morning.

“Sometimes you get lucky,” he said.

The collision, which took place between Deep Creek and Fox Lake, was called in to Environment Yukon’s TIPP line at 11:25 p.m. Friday.

Knutson said the meat was given to a local Ta’an Kwäch’än family.

After such collisions, meat isn’t always recoverable but often moose quarters are still edible, he said.

No one was available at the Carmacks RCMP detachment this morning to speak about the condition of the driver and any passengers.

It’s a high-collision area, Knutson said of that stretch along the North Klondike Highway.

Moose often emerge from the lowlands or valleys along the sides of the road to feed on willows and move back and forth across the roadway.

Last fall, a calf was hit by a vehicle and killed. Its mother met the same fate the following night, Knutson said.

He advised drivers to slow down when travelling through the area.

Hey June...Thank you for those kinds words. I too encourage others to participate in this kinda stuff, it is fun and healthy to yak one POV to yet another.
I do also "feel" there will be a time very soon when one will NOT be able to "express" ourselves "freely" as soooo many folks wail and snivel and use many tactics to scare another from "a" conversation. Seems it's here already
I get called lots of stuff, some of it good, much bad...and some plain ugly.
Folks get real pissed when those tactics fail with me, absolutely hate pesky facts and their minions references. Also too the PC Crusaders seem to be worse than "GW zealots, and ruuuun often to HRT's to "silence", "fine" and shame one...or try too?
June, I hope I don't ruin it for you? But June, I can write my name in the snow...with pee...standing up? What I'm trying to say June..."Josey"?

...I'm a dude June, enjoy the weekend, be careful on the ice and watch out for those drivers...most suck in this town.

Yukon and on, I have said several times and will repeat again... My personal opinion is that the forums are for everyone to offer an opinion whether you agree with it or not.. When people go into personal attack, I think that is a form of bullying. If you don't like what someone says, thumbs down it and move on. There really is no call for comments such as you directed at Josey. I enjoy many of her posts without necessarily having to agree with them. I like all of the regular posters. It means people are watching and thinking about the issues.. reading and commenting. Its how we make effect change. I wish everyone in the Territory posted.

I am sure the family that received the meat went out and cut it up. It's better they did this then just let the entire moose go to waste. Great job Yukon Environment on not wasting the meat. Too bad some people have so much jealousy in their soul, maybe one needs to get out of Whitehorse once in a while and go enjoy Yukon nature and get your soul connected to Mother Earth to be content in life.

I propose that in the future, road-killed and meat seized by the Environment Department be donated to the Salvation Army or Challenge as they benefit the greatest number of those who really need it. Race, income and fortune will not matter then - charity will.

Just like how Natives get good food at the hospital and everyone else gets processed garbage.

Hey Yukon and on...If your tired of my ramblings, then don't read them.
I'm tired of lots of stuff too, hence my Gatling rock tosser.
Good shot at me though, almost seems like a personal one...I can take it...I did.
If we lived in a merit based Yukon, rather than the PC Crusaders utopia things I go on about would be moot. As you may suspect I'm not much of a bag-licker, loathe PC and apparently on rented land, kowtow to none so debating with me is a formidable challenge...up for it?
You must have some insight as to who I am, grab a set and tell me how you feel in person? I won't get angry, just do what I do moderator sans.
Not sure if you've been noticing I have a few folks here who are diametric to your POV on ol' Josey and enjoy my POV/ramblings.
This thread clearly not and I kinda expected so...since I mentioned the moose in the room and upset the narrative.
Should I put on some coffee for when you get a set...and come have a conversation with me?
FYI...it is actually "Josey" in case you have also a reading comprehension issue.

I wonder who is the Ta'an family that was given the meat to? I am a TKC FN elder and I didn't hear of this. My family and I are still using the dry meat and small game and moose meat we harvested last fall. Just curious.

i saw where that moose got hit, I'm pretty sure it was on category A settlement lands, as I used to work for T.K.C Lands Dept. however a few years back a moose got hit right in front of my cabin at Fox creek and the Game Dept, along with my family's blessings gave it to the F.N diet program (?) at Whitehorse General Hosp.

Josie,
I've about had it with your completely useless, non-constructive comments. It must be nice to hypocritically criticize everyone else from the comfort of a home you are not paying for. Maybe if you had a job and were pulling your own weight you would have less time and energy to waste throwing stones.

"Knutson said the meat was given to a local Ta’an Kwäch’än family."

Well that was very nice.
Were there no other families near by that are struggling, who cannot shoot cows, calves or bulls 24/7/365?
...last time I checked, hunger knows no ethnicity...?
Heaps of "regular" less culturally elite Yukon folks are hungry these days, anyone else noticing this too?
Better question...anyone care?
Reading the news as of late seems to be only two types of folks here, the first migrants and the most recent WAVE....everyone else can fund it and go hungry?
