Molotov cocktail lobbed into downtown store

Multiple reported incidents last weekend of masked individuals causing mayhem in Whitehorse have so far resulted in no arrests – but have sparked plenty of attention on social media.

At about 6 p.m. last Thursday, Tags Food & Gas manager Pret Sidhu and one of his business partners were in the back of the Fourth Avenue store when they heard someone scream “fire!”

When Sidhu went to investigate, he found a burning Molotov cocktail on the floor.

He was able to grab the bottle and chuck it outside before any explosion of flames could occur, but still had to use a fire extinguisher to put out the small fire it caused.

After that, he ran outside to deal with the bottle leaking flammable liquid onto the pavement, causing another small fire.

The incident was captured on a video that has since been widely shared on social media. In it, a masked and hooded individual is seen running to the front door of Tags with a flaming bottle in hand, opening the door, throwing it inside and running away.

There is only one individual seen on the video, though Sidhu says there was an accomplice.

This wasn’t the end of it for Tags.

At about 2:30 Friday morning, another bottle was thrown at Tags with flammable liquids in it. This time, it wasn’t lit and just hit the outside of the building.

Sidhu says something needs to be done, and he fears for the safety of his employees.

“They’re just doing a job,” he said.

So far, despite the video footage, RCMP have been unable to find those involved.

“It is unclear if the same suspects were involved in both incidents; however, police believe that both incidents are related, and the investigation in ongoing,” says a statement from Const. Carlie McCann.

Sidhu said that though he sees the RCMP officers on the ground doing their job, there isn’t enough time or effort put into stopping these types of crimes on the investigative end.

“People that are investigating these incidents, they are not putting their full hearts into it,” he told the Star.

“If someone was seriously hurt, or there was a body, we would have this solved already.”

Much of his criticism involves what he says is a longstanding lack of success in prosecuting small crimes in Whitehorse.

“If you don’t deliver everything on a silver platter, nothing is going to be done about it,” Sidhu said.

He wants local politicians to step up to put pressure on police, calling out all three political parties for being soft on crime.

“We pay taxes, we pay money for them to take care of us,” Sidhu said.

Many other people on social media are posting similar comments in response to this incident and others, criticizing the lack of prosecution in cases like this one.

Last Sunday night, there was a report of another incident in Whitehorse involving an attack by masked individuals.

A Facebook post by an anonymous person alleges that three masked and hooded individuals assaulted somebody with bear spray at about 11:30 p.m.

In the description of that incident, the post says a dark red Toyota Rav4 was driving erratically down Two Mile Hill when it stopped to block the vehicle behind it.

The three male occupants then got out – the driver was reported to be female – and went up to the car behind them and bear sprayed the passenger through an open window.

The post goes on to say the same vehicle has been involved in more than 10 alleged violent acts in the past two weeks involving bear spray, tasers and air guns.

In the comments section of that post, people question the veracity of the story because it was posted anonymously, but the RCMP did confirm to the Star that this incident was reported to police.

Though they would not say exactly what happened, the RCMP responded that they were investigating the incident and had identified suspects.

“The victim(s) of this incident took appropriate steps to keep themselves safe by not attempting to engage further with the suspects and seeking medical assistance,” an email from the RCMP reads.

“Police have identified suspects and are interested in speaking with any other witnesses to this incident who may be able to provide further details.”

The RCMP are asking anyone with either dashcam footage or surveillance footage of either incident to reach out to them.

Any information can be provided to police directly at 667-5555, or anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers at 667-6715.

Is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black? See this story:

Violence and creativity have certainly escalated. The courts have to start cracking down hard. The jail is full? Well tough, build another one. This government throws away so much money, whats a 5o million more to build a 'mental' hospital to home all the socio- psycho paths society is generating?

When one of these people committing these crimes is assaulted, there will be an outcry, but I will have no empathy. Play stupid games, and win stupid prizes.
