MLAs to return March 3
The Yukon legislature is scheduled to reconvene Thursday, March. 3.
The Yukon legislature is scheduled to reconvene Thursday, March. 3.
MLAs have been on break since early December 2021.
While there is no official indication of what will be on the order paper, the first day should see the Liberal government present a new budget for the 2022-23 fiscal year. The current fiscal year will expire March 31.
Last fall, the major issues were the sexual abuse scandal at Hidden Valley Elementary School, and a motion calling for the resignation of Tracy-Anne McPhee, the minister of Justice and Health and Social Services, and deputy premier. She was the minister of Education when the scandal was first reported to Yikon government officials in 2019.
The Liberals remain in power due to the Confidence and Supply Agreement struck with the NDP in April 2021.

@Nice life.
From a distance it does look like an ideal job to be an MLA, but like most things it is not always as it may appear.
MLAs risk looking like a total idiot if they speak without knowing what they are talking about. This is a common situation because most of them do not write their own speeches or answers to questions in the Legislature. (Some just bash on anyway)
They also must give up family events like birthdays and school pagents at Christmas and other times because they have other meetings and events to attend.
They also get harassed in grocery stores and similar places where they are face to face with the public who have a beef of some kind with them.
Their kids get hassled in school because of the popular mood of the day towards the party or the individual.
There are other issues most of the elected people would care to avoid, but the good ones don't run away, they listen and begin a dialog towards some understanding or agreement.
It is often said, Why do we end up with these candidates? Where are the smart business people who know what they're doing? They could do a much better job.
The truely smart people know what the MLA job includes and they are smart enough not to throw their hat into the game, despite that gold-plated pension.

I want this job, show up to work every three months, do and say what you want. Make decisions that affect the health, safety and well-being of a large number of people. When you do something wrong you are not held accountable, continue to earn a lot of money and when you are told you should resign you can say - no thanks I think I will stay and your boss the Premiere throws a public temper tantrum and says “you can’t make me”. Like I said, I want this job.

@YUKONER
Only Mr. Silver can call an election, but losing a vote of confidence will prompt him to do so. Ms. White will never assume as much power and influence as she has now...so what will she do with it?

Listen, we all make mistakes, McPhee included! But the path to righteousness is through forgiveness and understanding!

It's too early for an election.
The truckers and their supporters have lots of time to use democracy by voting and running in the next election.
Driving around in trucks is not the way to be effective, why not run in the next election?

Check the rules! on Feb 16, 2022 at 7:25 pm
@Matthew, check the Standing Orders (the rules.) The Yukon Legislative Assembly meets for a minimum of 60 sitting days per year, unless otherwise agreed to by all parties. It’s been that way for decades. Most of the work of government, except passing the budget and other legislation, is done outside of the House. This is the same regardless of which political party is in power, and it’s virtually never changed. If anything, it’s only been reduced during election years, not increased. This is not unusual for many jurisdictions. Hey, be glad you don’t live in Texas - they only meet every second year!

Why are they even off work? Were in a major social, and economic disaster! I bet they don't mind as their cheques haven't been affected..

Now another opportunity to get rid of the Liberals and their grey shirts.
