SEARCH ENDS ON SAD NOTE – An extensive search was launched after Ayla Sanders went missing on April 17.
The body of a woman found floating in Schwatka Lake on Friday afternoon has been identified as that of Ayla Sanders.
The body of a woman found floating in Schwatka Lake on Friday afternoon has been identified as that of Ayla Sanders.
Sanders, 28, had been reported missing on April 17.
The RCMP and Yukon coroner Heather Jones released the identity early Saturday afternoon.
“Ms. Sanders’ family have been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged to be held in Abbotsford (B.C.) to determine cause of death,” says the coroner’s release.
“Criminality is not believed to be a factor in Ayla’s death.”
Sanders had last been seen leaving her downtown residence on foot.
Just days after she was reported missing, the RCMP issued a press release asking the public for assistance in locating her.
Numerous posters were put up around the city by Sanders’ family.
The poster was shared over 1,000 times on Facebook.
Extensive search efforts by the RCMP included a search of Schwatka Lake by boat and by helicopter in early May.
“We extend appreciation to all who took part in the search for Ayla and offer our sincere condolences to her family and friends at this difficult time,” the coroner said.
“Yukon Coroner’s Service continues our investigation with the assistance of Whitehorse RCMP.”
Sanders’ father, Chris Moir, described his daughter in an interview with the Star in late April as one-of-a-kind who was friendly, unique and free-spirited.
Those who met her remembered her, he said.
The body of a 56-year-old woman, who the RCMP are not publicly identifying, was found last Thursday morning in the water near the Whitehorse Rapids Dam.
