A missing five-year-old girl has been returned to her family after a neighbour found her a short distance from her home.

The child went missing at approximately 10:40 p.m. Sunday when she wandered away from her residence on Mayo Road.

Family and friends had last seen the girl playing in the yard at about 9 p.m. They searched the area, but later called RCMP.

The RCMP's Police Dog Services unit and other detachment members went to the scene.

In the end, it was a neighbour, who was helping in the search, who located the child about 1.5 kilometres from her home. She was returned to her family without injuries.

The family's name was not released.

"RCMP Whitehorse is grateful for the assistance of family and friends who helped search for and ultimately find this little girl,” said Sgt. Don Rogers, the RCMP's spokesperson.
