The body of a 17-year-old boy who was last seen nearly two weeks ago has been found.

RCMP investigators located Tristan Chapman’s body Wednesday morning in the Yukon River near Whitehorse.

Chief coroner Kirsten Macdonald said the youth’s remains were found in the Marwell area.

Neither the RCMP nor the coroner are speculating on Chapman’s cause of death.

His body will undergo an autopsy at Vancouver General Hospital on Monday morning.

Staff Sgt. Brad Kaeding said it’s unknown at this time whether foul play is involved.

Chapman was last seen the night of May 22 leaving Shipyards Park and walking toward Boston Pizza in Whitehorse. He was reported missing May 25.

Police are seeking information from anyone who saw or talked to Chapman around that time.

“The investigators are obviously very interested in trying to put some pieces to that puzzle together and trying to figure out who was the last person he talked to, who was the last person that Tristan might have seen, any comments at all that he might have made,” Kaeding said this morning.

He said police are trying to put together a timeline leading up to Chapman’s death.

Whitehorse RCMP had been investigating his disappearance, and sought information from the public about his possible whereabouts.

Macdonald said investigators were conducting an aerial search of the Yukon River on Wednesday when they found him.

Chapman was from Ross River. He was in Grade 11 at the community’s school.

“To respect his family’s wishes, the principal will not take media calls at this point,” Amanda Couch, a Department of Education spokeswoman, said this morning.

School superintendent Greg Storey is in Ross River today.

He said the department is working out a plan to support students and families.

Many of the older students are away on class trips, including the two or three Grade 11 students, who are in Vancouver.

This morning, school staff held a circle at the Hope Centre for the younger children, talking to them about grief and how they can get help if they need it.

A social worker and mental health worker are both in the community now, but Storey said they’re working to bring in more support people from outside Ross River.

“We’re basically trying to work like one community and one family,” he said.

Storey will be meeting with the Grades 7-8 students tomorrow when they come through Whitehorse on the way home from their class trip.

Whitehorse RCMP Cpl. Natasha Dunmall told the Star at the time of Chapman’s disappearance that he was previously living in Whitehorse, but had recently returned to his home community.

As a result, the police investigation focused both on Ross River and Whitehorse, Dunmall said.

The autopsy will be completed Monday morning, but waiting for the results will likely take some time, said Macdonald. Toxicology testing will also be done.

The coroner said that in the meantime, she’ll use an investigative system called the Golden Triangle to gather further information.

“We look at the body, the scene and the history, so while we’re waiting for autopsy results, we’re still collecting information for those three investigative points,” Macdonald said.

In a news release, the RCMP thanked the public for tips already received, and ask that anyone with information contact 667-5555.

“It’s better to have the same information four or five times than not at all,” Kaeding said.

“So even if you think your piece of information is very small and somebody else probably told the police that, it’s better (for us) to hear it as many times as need be rather than missing that piece of the puzzle altogether.”

Don't forget about him. Too many people die without anyone finding out what happened. The public has a right to know for safety reasons as well. My heart stopped for a minute when I read he was found. Whatever the reason it should not have happened. He looked like a nice young man.
