Yukon RCMP are searching for two men who remain missing, possibly in the Faro area.

The pair left the area at the end of October 2021, saying they were heading into the back country for the winter.

No contact has been made with them since that time, police said today.

Evan Russell and Mitchell Fichten, both 28, are now being sought.

Police received a report of the two missing men from family members on June 14.

Russell and Fichten “were headed into the Yukon backcountry for an extended duration,” police said in a statement.

“Investigators believe the two men may have left by boat on the Pelly River. At the time of their departure, they had a wall tent, gear, and supplies and were intending to live in the wilderness over the winter months.

“Their exact destination in the Yukon wilderness is uncertain.”

RCMP in Faro, Ross River and Watson Lake are working with territorial conservation officers and Yukon Search and on the investigation.

“These men are considered missing persons,” police said.

Russell is described as a Caucasian man with brown hair and brown eyes. In October 2021, he had a full beard. He is 183 cm (six feet) tall and weighs 68 kg (150 lbs.).

Fichten, also a Caucasian, has brown hair and green eyes. In October 2021, he was cleanshaven. He is178 cm (five feet, 10 inches) tall and weighs 83 kg (182 lbs.).

Anyone with information that may assist in confirming their safety and well-being is encouraged to contact police.

Sadly another example of those who do not understand the unwritten rules of wilderness survival. Always tell someone your approximate planned destination and have an In-Reach or other emergency tracker with you. Hopefully this pair are found unharmed.

Hopes and prayers these men are found safe and sound. My heart goes out to the families.
