Ministers poring over fresh mandate letters

Premier Darrell Pasloski issued his cabinet ministers new mandate letters Tuesday– seven months after the cabinet “shuffle” that resulted in almost all ministers taking on new departments.

“Over the last four years, we’ve accomplished many things that we’ve listed on our platform commitment,” Pasloski told the Star yesterday.

The issuing of new letters, Pasloski said, is essentially a “refocus” for the remainder of the cabinet’s term and possibly beyond that. The next election is due in 2016.

Each of the ministers’ letters begins the same way, with an outline of four major goals: making investments in infrastructure, improving the Yukon’s regulatory regime, building partnerships with First Nations and making the territory a place to live, work, play and raise a family.

Underneath the list of lofty goals is a task list, specific to all of the departments the ministers are in charge of.

While some are the same-old goals for each minister’s department, there are some new additions for each minister.

Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor, for example, is newly tasked with hosting a regional discussion on the issue of missing and murdered aboriginal women, prior to the National Roundtable discussion in 2016.

Among his tasks, Stacey Hassard, the minister responsible for the Yukon Housing Corp., is meant to begin implementing “components” of the recently released housing action plan.

Adhering to timelines and budgets for capital projects such as the detox centre taking over the old Sarah Steele Building, the Salvation Army Centre of Hope and the planned continuing care facility in Whistle Bend are tasks added to Health Minister Mike Nixon’s plate.

He will also be in charge of implementing the new Mental Health and Addictions strategy.

Presenting the letters to the ministers was “not necessarily” because of the cabinet shuffle last January, Pasloski said.

By switching up the ministerial roles, the end result will be “better governance and overall management,” he said.

“What that does, is they bring their experiences from their old portfolio, and it puts a new, fresh lens on a new portfolio.”

The timing of the letters being issued is curious, as the ministers have already had seven months – and a session in the legislative assembly – in their new positions.

Pasloski insists the move was to update the government’s goals, reflecting more recent work such as his suggestion in April’s budget address that the territory create its own education curriculum.

The last mandate letters were issued at the beginning of the cabinet’s term in office.

“No government has ever done that,” Pasloski said.

He described himself as “very proud” of his government’s achievements over the last four years.

“We must continue to build on this momentum,” he said.

“Our vision is to grow Yukon into a region that contributes to the economy of Canada, so that our children will have the same opportunities and advantages that we have.

“I look forward to working with my ministerial colleagues to continue to work towards this shared goal.”

The premier seems to bear a remarkable physical resemblance to Benito Mussilini.
When are we going to get home grown leaders instead of freak imports on the far right of everything wrong?

I don't pretend to know which party will form the next government, but I do know: some will win and others will not, and the electorate will continue to complain whatever the outcome. Anonymous once said, "Be careful what you wish for...you may get it."

Liberals and NDP lose in the wilderness on Aug 15, 2015 at 4:58 pm

Look at all their support above and what they state.
Do the liberals and NDP support this type of talk and disrespect for our Premier who has shown he can be very successful and is trying to do the same for the Yukon.
Get a life folks because you are giving the Yukon a bad name and are harming our image with pure trash talk.
Do think someone looking wants to hear this BS?
People of the Yukon you need to think what, who and why you are voting because these comments are dangerous for our future.

So misguided elected officials can't get involved in any business.
NDP and Liberals have no business so no worries about them

For full disclose I voted for all the idiots, the Darrell and the leef. ...and yes their boss the Steve.
A admitted hat trick of stupid via my ballot.
So, so fine a job they have done with the imported slave labour that HAS absolutely upset the scene here...
So arrogant the three stooges are, so disconnected, so more like "liberal max".... that those three idiots have created after decades of blue team support, a non voter...as the entire process is a game...an illusion of democracy.
Shi**y thing though? When I think of the alternatives....I get the ring of "Canadstan"
Blue team outski....Sharia law in new Canadstan coming to a politically correct socially engineered metropolis near you soon.

Interesting, all the negative comments on my earlier post, yet nobody offering an explanation of the ECO mandate I quoted.
I can only assume that we shouldn't ask questions.
Regardless, why is YG involved in a private venture? What business does YG have project managing a mining venture business?

Over the last 15 years the Yukon has done well with steady growth.
With the world economy down for a number of reasons we are in good shape.
Get your blinders off and see the real Yukon, not what you think you see.

It's sad when the government wants to make it harder on the middle class and easier on the rich. This government has underminded First Nations. It supports fracking. It wants to build a healthcare facility where no one wants to live. They put lots up for lottery and no one bid on them. They have the stupidest commercial attacking the liberals editing out the rest that was being said.
A smart person would realize that no government acts by themselves. They have ministers, senators, cabinet members to advise them. It is a joint effort from the whole party not one like they lead you to believe in their commercial. Mr. Harpers' party has all but drove mining out of the territory driving our unemployment rate higher. The only one they bash is the liberals but what about the NDP party, green party, I am so sick of conservatives stupid commercials and their promises. Sad to say I voted conservatives last election. What a mistake. Time for change.

The 5th goal (which is really the only goal) "Get Me Re-elected - I need a pension."

Watch how much taxpayer money will be spent in the next year for the blatant political motive of selling the Yukon Party to the taxpayer. A page out of Steven Harpers playbook.
There is much more that can be said about these "re-election" letters but with the level of sophistication these guys have we'll let them expose themselves over the next year.

Now that's an image!

Too little too late, time to say goodbye. Instead of sending out useless news propoganda the premier should call an election. He acts everything will be status quo after next election but we all know it will not be so. Bye bye.

"building partnerships with First Nations and making the territory a place to live, work, play and raise a family."

That Darryl.. he sure has a good sense of humor. He failed to protect seniors and in fact did financial harm to many of them..he failed to protect renters.. people and families can't afford to live here if they don't work for government, live 14 to a house or work 3 jobs.. The highest unemployment ever.. now there's some happy families...more folks at the food bank than ever in our history, OVER 3,000 foreign workers in Whitehorse.. I could go on and I hope others do. Mr. Paslawski, in my opinion you, and your government are complete and utter failures. You even failed at mining, failed to find common ground with FN..really? you are proud of that?

"“We must continue to build on this momentum,” he said."

I think the momentum is like a snowball rolling down a hill. The downward momentum could have been arrested with consultation, and collaboration and fairness to Yukon voters and First Nations. Its too late now! In my mind the momentum cannot be reversed and this government will be replaced.

It would have taken only a few basic things to maintain public support but basic elements were ignored and the power associated with governing the Yukon will be given away.
