Team Yukon is back in action for the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island.
More than 170 Yukon athletes, coaches and mission staff are representing the territory at the country’s largest multi-sport competition from last Saturday until March 5.
Team Yukon has athletes competing in 15 of the 20 sports on the schedule, including archery, which is making its return to the Games.
“Hot on the heels of the territory’s successful 2023 Arctic Winter Games performances in Alberta, I am excited to be sending another team off to the Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island,” Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn said last Thursday.
“I know our dedicated athletes will carry the momentum the Yukon built at the Arctics to P.E.I.
“The Yukon government is proud to support the territory’s athletes as they grow as skilled competitors and as inspiring community leaders. Good luck in P.E.I., Team Yukon, and have fun!”
Chef de Mission Trevor Twardochleb called the Games “an important opportunity for Yukon athletes to compete to their highest ability against the country’s best.
“Congratulations on making the team; I am proud of each and every one of you. I’d also like to thank our hosts in P.E.I. and the volunteers for the tremendous amount of work they have put in to make the Games possible.”
The Canada Games are the largest amateur multi-sport event in the country. They alternate between winter and summer every two years.
The Yukon government contributed $150,000 to support Team Yukon’s attendance at the event.
More than 3,000 athletes, coaches and mission staff from across Canada are attending the 2023 Games.
The competition features 20 sports, including the debuts of karate and female boxing and the return of fencing and archery.
Leading Team Yukon into the opening ceremonies as flag bearer last Saturday was hockey player Gavin McKenna.
At 14, McKenna was picked first overall in the 2022 Western Hockey League entry draft by the Medicine Hat Tigers.
In December 2022, his South Alberta Hockey Academy team won the Circle K Classic tournament, where he was named an all-star.
He tallied the most points and won the Most Valuable Player and Most Sportsmanlike awards.

Freedom is a right-wing concept indicating the existence of oppression wherever it is advanced… And yet we have commenters like Politico supporting such stupidities: War is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength. How ironic that ignorance would also be the basis on which the L-NDP coalition appoints its leaders.
WTFU!!!

Really, I’m not liberal or NDP, but why does this have to be political. Could we not just wish Good Luck and have fun to the athletes!

Mostyn loves the sound of his own voice. In fact, I don’t know why his face is even here. Using other athletes success for his own political gain.
Congrats to the athletes.

S-M-TFU! Weren’t you one of those climate emergency posers? Now you’re encouraging climate destruction - hypocrites - Every last liberal one of them!
Tizya-Tramm observed:
“Climate change is even threatening the First Nation’s identity as “people of the lakes.” Scientists say that increased temperatures and higher precipitation have led to wetter conditions and thawing permafrost, which have contributed to the disappearance of dozens of large lakes in the region over recent decades.”
But the Liberals… They keep spewing CO2 into the atmosphere with their privilege - Flitting here, and flitting there, while restricting your ability to do so, telling you that you must sacrifice your quality of life so the Lib-Gods can play in the fields, acres, and acres of your empty headspace!
YOUR continued support of the Liberals is not a virtue it is absolute stupidity!
We are in the middle of a Liberal Change Catastrophe… If we do not get rid of them sooner than later we will lose our homes, communities, country and our freedom - Psychologically and physically!

Who better to be the face of Team Yukon at the Canada Winter Games than the very guy who pulled the plug and cancelled the 2027 Games here in Whitehorse?
I swear that these Liberals have no shame at all talking out of both sides of their mouths.
