Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor isn't done with politics.

Taylor, who has served two terms in the Yukon Legislative Assembly, announced Wednesday evening she is seeking the Yukon Party nomination for Whitehorse West – a riding she has held since 2002.

She made her intentions known at her annual constituency barbecue.

"There are a number of factors that led me to this decision,” Taylor told the Star this morning.

"I'm pleased to continue to receive full support from my family. As the former premier (Dennis Fentie) said, this isn't just a job, it's a life choice,” she said.

Taylor said she wants to continue with the momentum she's had on a number of initiatives in her riding.

She added she's looking forward to building on the economic success the territory had been experiencing in recent years.

"We also need to address the social issues that have come with this growth in the economy and the population,” she said.

These issues include land availability, affordable housing, health care and renewable energy, Taylor said.

Taylor, who's lived in Whitehorse West with her husband and young son for the past 13 years, said the "incredible growth” in her riding has dictated the nature of much of her work in the past nine years.

The completion of the Hamilton Boulevard extension and the partnerships with the municipal and federal governments built through this project is something Taylor is proud of.

She has also worked to secure funding for a second ambulance station, to be built below the Canada Games Centre. Construction work for this should begin later this summer.

Taylor called the new Ingram subdivision, which is comprised of 220 dwelling units, "much needed space” to house Yukoners.

She believes selecting the next government in the Yukon should be fairly simple.

"The next election is about choosing the government best able to build on the economic success of the territory,” she said. "We need experience, new ideas and a creative approach.”

Taylor, a former minister of Justice, is impressed with all the candidates who have put their names forward so far, saying many of them encompass all three of these qualities.

As for how long the deputy premier sees herself in politics, Taylor said she will continue to "take it day by day.”

Fentie and ministers Patrick Rouble, Archie Lang and John Edzerza have said they are not running again.

Speaker Ted Staffen, a Yukon Party MLA, is leaving politics as well.

Meanwhile, long-time Yukon Party supporter Valerie Boxall secured the Yukon Party nomination for Copperbelt South at a nomination meeting held Wednesday evening.

Boxall is a resident of Wolf Creek, which falls within the new electoral district boundaries, and has worked for the Yukon government for 13 years.

Since 2004, she has worked as an executive assistant in the cabinet offices.

Originally from Saskatchewan, Boxall first came to the territory to work at a placer mine in Dawson City.

Boxall is the fourth Yukon Party candidate to formally be nominated to run in the coming election.

Scott Kent, a Liberal cabinet minister from 2000 to 2002, will represent Riverdale North in the coming fall election.

Lana Putnam has secured Whitehorse Centre, while former party resident Mike Nixon has been nominated to represent Porter Creek South.

This is great news. Taylor is probably the hardest working MLA in the Yukon right now.

I guess we should expect to see your name on the ballot this coming election since you know it all. Ms Taylor happens to be one of the hardest working politicians in Yukon and you just don't know what you are talking about. What is your real name anyway?
