Minister announces funding for nine Yukon organizations
Nine Yukon arts and culture groups will receive a financial boost from the federal government.
Nine Yukon arts and culture groups will receive a financial boost from the federal government.
During the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous festivities over the weekend, Mélanie Joly, the federal minister of Canadian Heritage, announced that $2 million will be given to nine organizations.
They are: the Association franco-yukonnaise, the Dawson City Arts Society, the Dawson City Music Festival Association, Jazz Yukon, Les EssentiElles, Whitehorse Concerts, the Yukon Arts Centre and the Rendezvous society.
“Each of these organizations contributes to the richness, diversity and unique character of the North,” Joly said on Saturday.
“The Government of Canada values creators in all fields – investing in talented Canadians helps create jobs, encourages tourism and improves overall quality of life and sense of community.”
The funds will help the groups in promoting the arts, developing official languages in minority communities and supporting local festivals.
At the Yukon Arts Centre, the 24-year-old sound system was able to be upgraded to something more modern – an undertaking which cost the centre about $167,000.
“The arts centre is the best performance venue in the North, which means we can attract top-notch talent from both North and South of 60,” said Deborah Bartlette, chair of the Yukon Arts Centre Corp.
“This sound system is an important part of keeping the arts centre a first-rate facility.”
André Bourcier, vice-president of lAssociation franco-yukonnaise, also thanked the minister for the financial assistance.
He said it will sustain the organization’s operations for the next three years.
Between the association and LesEssentiElles, the groups will receive more than $1.6 million over the next three years.
Music and theatre groups included in the funding announcement will receive about $250,000, to be shared amongst each other.

...and here we go again. Turn the tap on Ottawa and let the money roll out. Throw it around like snowflakes. Everybody line up and get a piece, after all aren't we all entitled to some of that loose change. Don't concern yourself with the taxpayer, after all they can feed at the trough as well. Yup the Liberals have not lost their collective touch in doling out the loot. It is their way of buying continuing votes in future elections. Get them hooked. Reel them in. They will be terrified of voting us out because the gold will stop pouring in.
Frankly none of you deserve a nickel (I'd say penny but the gov't scraped it). If the communities wants these organizations to exist then that is where the funds should come from - the citizens, or through fund raising, etc.. Not from handouts in Ottawa, YTG or the COW.

Umm Bart, not certain which other dominate culture you write of.
What I am certain of though Bart, any dominant cultures that have in your words "evolved" in recent times? They were engineered.
In terms comparable to your "evolving" rational, that engineering that I write of...is like a GMO.
Odd lefties often loathe GMO's...a little ironic eh?
Personally I'd love to see a complete de-funding of special interests, in particular the elitist ones.
Speaking of "evolution", I myself could do without what our coveted RVF has "evolved" into. Like sheep we are herded into a field to let political blow-holes pat themselves on the back.
...let the JW haters hate.....

I think the Association franco-yukonaise should have to share their grant with some other dominant cultures that have evolved over the last decade. Vote for The Yukon Party.
