The RCMP are working with City of Whitehorse to identify suspects in numerous parking meter thefts over the past few months.

Since mid-December 2018, 52 city parking meters have been damaged and/or stolen from downtown Whitehorse, including from areas along Main, Front, Elliott and Steele streets.

To date, 36 meters have been recovered, but most were found severely damaged and robbed of their contents, police said Tuesday.

Thefts and associated damages are estimated to be around $66,000 so far.

Investigators believe that there are several individuals and vehicles involved, and are reviewing video footage in hopes of identifying suspects to advance the investigation.

Anyone with any information on the thefts is asked to contact the police at 667-5555.

The public is asked to call the police immediately if suspicious activity is observed around parking meters, including individuals seen with tools, or vehicles that have bumped into the parking meters, knocking them to the ground.

“If you come across any out-of-place parking meters on trails or in other areas in and around Whitehorse, please report this to the police as well,” police said.

The last meter incident was May 1, the city said Tuesday afternoon.
