One of the city's mayoral candidates is concerned that at least half a dozen of his election signs have been stolen off public property.

Rick Karp told the Star late this morning he first received a call from a supporter Thursday wondering what happened to his large sign standing at the bottom of Two Mile Hill.

"She said, ‘where did your sign go?' I didn't know it was missing,” Karp said.

The frame for the sign is still up but the image has been taken out, he said.

"I thought that maybe it was wind, but I looked everywhere; it was gone.”

While driving around Whitehorse this morning, Karp said, he noticed smaller signs had also gone missing from the Hamilton Boulevard area.

"I don't see this happening to other candidates. If everyone's signs were being taken down, I would say. ‘fine, that's just part of the election,'” Karp said.

"But it seems to just be me.”

Under the Zoning Bylaw, election signs on public property can be placed at the bottom of Two Mile Hill, Montainview Drive just past Range Road, on Lewes Boulevard just before Hospital Road and on Robert Service Way just past the roundabout.

Karp said the signs cost "several thousands of dollars” to make, as well as time and energy to put up.

City public relations manager Matthew Grant said bylaw officers have not received any complaints about missing signs.

If they are being taken, that would be considered theft, and be a matter for the RCMP, he said.

The city is set to go to the polls Oct. 18.
