Mayor Dan Curtis has proclaimed October to be the United Way Month.

Mayor Dan Curtis has proclaimed October to be the United Way Month.

Curtis made the proclamation at city council’s meeting on Monday.

The United Way kicks off its annual fundraising month every October, the mayor pointed out.

“It takes every part of the community – individuals, businesses, governments and organizations – to supply the passion, expertise and resources needed to create lasting change that improves lives and builds stronger communities,” said Curtis.

“The United Way advances the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for everyone, providing leadership and promoting volunteerism in all segments of the community, and providing funding for local programs that help improve our quality of life.”

The mayor made two other proclamations on Monday.

Friday, he proclaimed, is Yukon Sisters in Spirit Vigil and Red Dress Campaign Day.

For more than 40 years, the Yukon Aboriginal Women’s Council has advocated for the rights of women, girls and gender-diverse people in the Yukon and northern B.C., the mayor noted in his proclamation.

“The annual Yukon Sisters in Spirit Event highlights the ongoing issue of violence towards Indigenous women, girls and gender diverse people, and also honours victims and families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls,” he said.

“The Red Dress Campaign is a public art installation to honour the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls by hanging empty red dresses in a range of environments,” he said.

“Yukon has 42 missing and murdered women and girls, and hanging 42 empty Red Dresses will mark the absence of these women so we can’t forget that they are gone.”

Curtis also proclaimed Oct. 6-Oct. 10 as Fire Prevention Week.

The national initiative is designed to raise awareness about fire safety, he said.

Curtis said this year’s theme is Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen, as blazes in the kitchen remain one of the leading causes of home fires and fire-related injuries.

“Fire Prevention Week aims to educate people about the simple but important things they can do to keep themselves and those around them safe in their kitchens and homes,” he said.

No thank you, I don't support the Charity Industry.
I will continue to purchase and donate locally grown food to the food bank, so my money stays in the community to do more good.

The Mayor obviously doesn't know or doesn't care about the tactics United Way uses to separate working people from their hard earned salary.
As usual, there is one promoter at the top of the company targeted by United Way (in this case the Mayor) who stands to claim all the virtue for the initiative. He already has his photo in The Star doing exactly that.

Best to avoid United Way and donate to local charities where your money stays in the community and is not sent back to Toronto to pay salaries and bonuses of United way executives.

Would some electable person run against Dan in our next election? Wilf don't run please you only syphon off some votes from a potential change. You'd look good on the YDC board that governs YEC , I think.

Nathan, then tell him to fix the pot holes in the spring instead of late summer.

OMG the ignorance here is both astounding and unsurprising. It takes seconds to educate yourself...

United Way is a scam you should resist or avoid and here's why.

United Way unduly pressures people into 'donating at work' by making a badge system of reward levels which are circulated/reported to the management of the company which United Way is targeting. It is reported to management which staff members are 'donating' and which staff members are not 'donating'.

If you don't 'donate', your management knows it and relentless emails are sent reminding everyone to give to achieve the 'President's level award'. There becomes an atmosphere where others 'donate' simply for the sake of being seen by their management to 'donate' under the false impression that it will somehow help their careers.

Thanks, but I'll pick the causes that my donations go to rather than let some generic charity decide what virtue signaling proclamation gets the money.

They won't see a cent from me. I'm appalled that COW and YG endorses this and pressures employees to 'volunteer' to run UW events on the public dime for staff and resources. It's insane.

Having one paid employee here in the Yukon counts as top heavy then we should all be working for free. Funds donated here stay here.
