Mayo has been wracked with emergencies on land and water the past seven days.

On top of a boat capsizal Wednesday (see story, this page), two recent fires severely damaged a home and burned another building to the ground, resulting in an arrest on a suspicion of arson.

A house fire at the east end of the village at about 8 p.m. Monday rendered the structure "unsafe for further use” after it was heavily burned, Mayo RCMP said Wednesday afternoon.

"The circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire were deemed suspicious and additional resources, including arson investigators from the RCMP and Yukon Fire Marshal's office, were brought in to assist,” police said.

One suspect was arrested near the home.

No one was inside the building at the time.

"Three people were displaced as a result of this tragedy,” RCMP said.

Last Friday, a fire at the First Nation of Na-cho Nyak Dun drop-in centre at around 4:30 a.m. "burned the entire building to the ground.”

The cause was electrical and "non-criminal in nature,” RCMP added.

The two incidents do not appear to be related, according to the release.
