A 50-year-old man is dead following a fire in Riverdale this morning.

Firefighters were called to a four-plex on Lewes Boulevard at around 8:10 a.m.

Coroner Sharon Hanley says the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The RCMP, the fire marshal, the Whitehorse Fire Department and the coroner are all involved in the investigation.

Whitehorse Fire Chief Clive Sparks said firefighters were able to put out the flames in about five minutes and later discovered the man's body in a bedroom.

The remainder of the home suffered smoke and water damage.

His name is not being released until his next-of-kin can be notified.

The apartment had a mount for a smoke detector but there was no smoke detector attached, the chief said.

Three fire trucks and three support vehicles were on the scene for about three hours this morning.

The exact cause of the fire is not known at this point, but smoking in bed is suspected, RCMP said this morning.

The department has placed initial damage estimates at between $30,000 and $40,000.

The chief estimates the investigation will be completed by early next week.

How long has the medical community been telling us that smoking will kill you?
