The body of Walter Egg, who had been reported missing, was recovered from Kluane Lake on Wednesday, the Yukon Coroner’s Service said Thursday.

Egg, 68, of Destruction Bay, had been reported missing by his family last Sunday evening. Family had not had contact with him since the previous morning.

His body was located by the RCMP on Tuesday afternoon on the north side of Kluane Lake, approximately 250 metres from the shoreline, directly across from Destruction Bay.

“The investigation has confirmed that Mr. Egg had been travelling by snowmobile over an unstable patch of ice when the machine broke through,” the coroner’s service said.

“Both Mr. Egg and the snowmobile went into the lake, where Mr. Egg succumbed in the cold water.”

The coroner’s service, with the assistance of Haines Junction RCMP, continues to investigate the fatality.

“Yukon Coroner’s Service, along with the RCMP, reminds the public to use extreme caution when travelling on or near all Yukon waterways,” the office said.

“Please limit travel to daylight hours and times of good visibility only.

“If it is necessary to venture out from the shoreline, be sure to do adequate checks of ice thickness and know the route you will be travelling. Always travel with appropriate winter survival gear, including fully-functioning communication devices.”
