The city is getting an oxygen bar.

Whitehorse resident Shane MacLellan said today he'll be opening up his new business Skyscraper Apparel, Artwork and Oxygen Bar on July 1 at the Log Skyscraper on Lambert Street, where customers can strap on a mask and suck back O2.

'Me and my buddy are always brainstorming crazy things to do; we bought some tanks and some hoses,' he said in an interview.

'You pay up front for so many litres of oxygen. We ran some tests on ourselves; it felt pretty good,' he said.

He said he's excited to run the first oxygen bar in the Yukon and believes oxygen is a good way for people to get used to thinner air North of 60 and could help people relax.

MacLellan said that after deciding to proceed with the idea, he went through the appropriate government procedures to start his business.

'There wasn't too much red tape; there weren't any laws around it; anything that cost money was pretty much stripped out, like lawyers and things.

'I had to come up with all of my own waivers,' he said. 'It's 100 per cent safe.'

MacLellan said while he hopes people visit his new business, he is recommending that potential customers check with their physician before coming in.

'I do recommend that a person go and see a doctor before doing it. I don't recommend it as a medical procedure; I'm not a doctor.'

Pat Living, the spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Social Services, said this morning she isn't familiar with any requirements for oxygen bar proprietors but is looking into it.

She said when using oxygen, the health department has to abide by transport regulations to have the oxygen shipped.

Doug Caldwell, a spokesperson for the Department of Community Services, said this afternoon that while he is also aware of transportation regulations for oxygen, there is nothing regulating its consumption.

'Our concerns are focused on the handling, transport and storage of the material. Part of that is the atmosphere of the area as well, things such as open flames and opportunity for ignition.

'As far as the human consumption part of it, there's nothing here.'

Bryce Larke, the territory's medical officer of health, could not be reached for comment before press time this afternoon.
