Whitehorse RCMP have charged a man with second-degree murder following a death last Friday.

On their way to respond to a call from the Salvation Army shelter Friday evening, officers came upon a man who appeared to be unconscious, police reported this morning.

The man was outside in the vicinity of the shelter.

Officers attempted to resuscitate the man until an ambulance arrived, police said.

Further attempts to revive him were made at Whitehorse General Hospital, but were ultimately unsuccessful.

Jason Selamio, 37, a Whitehorse resident originally from the Northwest Territories, was pronounced dead sometime Friday night.

Police could not provide the exact time of death.

Ryan Darbyshire, 24, also of Whitehorse, has been charged with second-degree murder.

He is in custody and is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow.

This is the second homicide to occur in the territory this year.

The first resulted in a charge of second-degree murder being laid against a 16-year-old girl last August.

To Don McKenzie

With you being affiliated with the RCMP, you should know better then to judge anybody. Doesn't innocent until proven guilty mean anything to you. I know all of the Darbyshires personally and they are a well respected family. So McKenzie keep your ignorant opinions to yourself, in abbotsford or wherever you are these days.
