The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a man’s death at the Watson Lake Hospital early Wednesday morning.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a man’s death at the Watson Lake Hospital early Wednesday morning.
He has been identified as Darren Johnny, 26.
Johnny was a patient at the hospital when staff requested police assistance, Yukon RCMP said in a news release.
Police helped hospital staff provide medical care, and during this process, Johnny became unresponsive.
“CPR was commenced immediately however efforts to revive the patient were unsuccessful,” the release states.
Because of the police involvement at the time of Johnny’s death, Yukon RCMP requested an independent investigation by ASIRT.
The civilian organization investigates injuries and deaths that may have resulted from the actions of police.
They were expected to arrive in the territory Wednesday afternoon.
An ASIRT spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment before press time this afternoon.
Meanwhile, Yukon’s chief coroner has ordered an autopsy, expected to begin next week in Vancouver. Toxicology tests will also take place.
An autopsy is typically ordered when questions remain about cause of death.
“This person is young and he passed away quite suddenly, so the autopsy will help us to determine that,” said coroner Kirsten Macdonald.
The Yukon Hospital Corp. is conducting its own review of the incident, something it does in “any instance where we felt a review should take place,” said spokesman James Low.
He would not comment specifically on the case as it’s under investigation by ASIRT and the coroner.
“We are co-operating with these processes,” he said.

This is so devastating! So young and he left behind a little boy and so many people that loved him.
