Whitehorse RCMP, fire department crews and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel responded to a call about the single-vehicle mishap on the dusty gravel road just after 4 p.m.
They found a male occupant unconscious, not breathing and without a pulse. EMS attempted to revive him, but were unsuccessful.
The green sedan he had been riding in was flipped onto its roof, havingt come to rest in the bushes near the road.
Witnesses told police two men had fled from the scene.
It took police dogs only a few minutes to find the pair, who were hiding in the woods approximately 50 metres away.
The witnesses identified one of the men as the driver of the vehicle.
Police arrested William Gilbert Johnson of Whitehorse.
Johnson has been charged with a number of offences, including impaired driving causing death. He was remanded into police custody.
Police are still investigating the incident. They said they are not releasing the name of the victim out of respect for his family's wishes.
