It appears Yukoners are continuing to give generously to relief efforts in the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated the country on Nov 8.

More than $15,000 was raised Saturday night at a buffet dinner hosted by the Canadian Filipino Association of the Yukon.

"It was very successful,” association secretary Daniel Dao said in an interview today.

Parking was the only issue to come up at the dinner, hosted at the Mt. McIntyre Recreation Centre.

There are about a dozen families in Whitehorse who have others in their family directly impacted in the Philippines, Dao said.

The organization's mandate is to provide support for Filipinos living in the territory, he noted.

All 600 tickets were sold at $20 each, with the silent auction raising $7,000 and a 50/50 draw bringing in another $1,800.

Officials are deciding how the money will be used.

About half of those attending indicated they would like to see their $20 go to helping the families of Whitehorse residents impacted by the typhoon.

The other half indicated they wanted the money from their ticket to go to the global relief efforts.

Dao noted the extensive number of events held in Whitehorse to raise funds for the relief effort comes as no surprise.

Events have ranged from a showing by Vanier Catholic Secondary School about Filipinos who are living in the North, a Swinging for the Philippines fund-raiser party featuring local musicians and a number of other endeavors since the country was ravaged by the massive storm.

Dao said the association wanted to provide another venue for those who hadn't been able to get to other fund-raisers held throughout town.

The group will also be on-hand from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday at the Festival of Trees' Multicultural Community open house at the Yukon Convention Centre as well as the Winterval event set for 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.Saturday.

That event will include the Santa parade down Main Street followed by the lighting of the tree in front of the White Pass depot with the Waterfront Winter Arts Festival to follow at The Old Fire Hall on Front Street.

Sun Life Financial recently announced it has contributed $100,000 to support flood relief efforts in the Philippines as well.

The Yukon government has donated $25,000 to the cause.
