Environment Yukon estimates 13,000 litres of home heating fuel spilled on the Dempster Highway when a North 60 truck rolled off the roadway earlier this month.
That’s the eqivalent of 63 45-gallon drums.
Responding to the Star’s inquiries, communication analyst Diane Dryburgh-Moraal said by email this morning the company is working with the environmental protection branch to remediate and monitor the spill.
“To date, Environment Yukon is satisfied that the responsible party is meeting its legal obligations under the Environmental Protection Order and the Environment Act,” said Dryburgh-Moraal.
The incident occurred at approximately 11 a.m. Feb. 12 at kilometre 49, otherwise known as Ogilvie Ridge.
The driver was safe and made his way to the nearby maintenance camp for assistance.
Dryburgh-Moraal said an environmental response officer from Dawson City attended the scene along with a North 60 representative from Dawson and the company’s spill response trailer.
A snow berm was built in an attempt to contain the spill.
“An environmental consultant has been hired by North of 60 to address the spill, and separate contractors were hired to recover any remaining fuel and upright the tanker truck,” Dryburgh-Moraal explained.
“Recovery of the tanker truck found that a rock had punctured the two front compartments and that they had completely emptied their contents underneath the transport and onto the ground.”
