Conrad Tiedeman, a long-time Yukoner and Whitehorse resident, is a candidate for city council in the Oct. 18 municipal election.
"Having grown up in Whitehorse, I feel a strong commitment to my community,” he said late last week.
"If elected as a councillor, I will work hard to represent Whitehorse residents and work co-operatively with all levels of government,” said Tiedeman.
"Fiscal responsibility must be a key priority for the next city council. I would vote against any unnecessary tax increases during my term.”
Tiedeman is a recent graduate from The King's University College in Edmonton, with a B.A. in politics, history and economics.
Tiedeman has been involved in politics and election campaigns at the territorial and federal levels of government and hopes to put his skills to use in local public service.
"I would particularly like see an improved transit service in the community and better access to downtown parking,” he said.
"I would also support densification of the downtown core, increased building heights and more zoning clarity.
"The City of Whitehorse also needs to cut through the red tape for building contractors, to improve efficiency and promote cost-effective development.”
Tiedeman has served as a volunteer at the soup kitchen and is a director on the Yukon Conservative Association board.
He also completed a summer internship with the Conservative Resource Group in Ottawa.
At present, Tiedeman is working on the start-up of Midnight Sun News, a local newspaper for which he will be the spokeperson and a contributing writer.
Rick Karp is the only candidate for the mayoralty incumbent Bev Buckway plans to retire from.

This guy is 23-24 at the most. I don't want to see a council full of idealists cutting their teeth on my tax dollars.

Whitehorse City Council needs more fresh faces like this, especially business-minded ones.
