A Whitehorse resident was surprised to learn she is now $100,000 richer after purchasing a lottery ticket from a local retailer.

When Kelly Johnston checked her lottery numbers online early one recent morning, she thought she had won $1,000. But when she called the Western Canada Lottery Corp. to verify her numbers, she came to realize her winnings were more significant.

"It's awesome! I'm just thrilled, it's an incredible feeling!" Johnston said in a statement today.

She may buy a house with her winnings, she said, and contribute to Guaranteed Investment Certificates.

She won the money by matching the last six numbers on the EXTRA in conjunction with the LOTTO 6/49 draw for that day.

She purchased her ticket from the Shoppers Drug Mart in the Qwanlin Mall.

The last winning lottery ticket was claimed in May, when two Whitehorse residents shared more than $292,000 in lottery winnings.
