A cross-Canada investigation into the making and sharing of child pornography resulted in three search warrants being executed in Whitehorse this week, but no charges have been laid in the Yukon, nor are any expected.
Fifty-seven people were arrested and charged with a range of sex and exploitation crimes across the country.
Here in Whitehorse, RCMP officers seized a number of computers and related hardware, all of which have been been examined by the region's tech crime unit.
Police are not saying why no charges were laid, but are warning Yukoners "that individuals may prey upon insecure wireless Internet systems to surf the Internet.
"... A person should protect themselves (sic) at all times by securing their wireless Internet system by the various means available."
People who use a wireless router for their Internet should change their default password immediately upon installing the system. Default passwords are easily accessible on the Internet.
Adding an additional pass code will make it even harder to hack into an Internet account.
A spokesperson for the national force said today the investigation is ongoing, and officers are working to identify children who have been exploited.
"It would be premature for me to speculate that any Yukon victims were involved," said Sgt. Mark Groves of the Whitehorse detachment.
In 2007, two Yukon men, John Cafferata and Brian Nowazek, were charged with possessing child pornography after a Canadian/U.S. operation identified hundreds of suspects across the continent.
Neither man has been tried and both remain in custody.
