A local banker will make his television debut in a commercial to air on CTV this evening, after being recognized nationally for his remarkable work in customer service.

Vincent Shenk, the financial services manager at the Bank of Montreal’s Whitehorse branch, was nominated by his boss in June to appear in one of five commercials the bank was putting together.

The advertisements are meant to showcase five individuals in Canada who embody the BMO brand and are doing good things for clients and the company.

After a series of about three interviews with the advertising company which would be making the commercials, Shenk made the final cut.

“It’s a huge honour,” he said in an interview Tuesday.

“I work very hard. It was amazing to have some of that recognized, especially on a national level.”

As part of the bank’s partnership with reality television show The Amazing Race Canada, the commercial is set to air while the show plays at 6 p.m. Yukon time.

The crew came to film Shenk’s commercial at the end of June.

“It follows me and my story. I’ve been with BMO for about 4 1/2 years,” said Shenk.

Starting out as a teller in university, Shenk moved up the ranks to assistant branch manager while he lived in Prince George, B.C.

Then he came to Whitehorse two years ago, without ever having laid eyes on the city or the territory.

The move was one of the most wonderful things that could have happened to him, he said.

Moving from his personal history with the Canadian bank, the commercial shifts to footage from a float plane en-route to Dawson City, where Shenk is bringing his clients at Dawson Home Hardware some paperwork, saving them the five-hour drive into Whitehorse.

Although embellished for advertising purposes, at the heart of it, this type of action is exactly what Shenk strives for with clients: going the extra mile.

“It’s a bit above and beyond what I’d normally do. I can’t always charter a plane,” Shenk laughed.

“But I hope it made them feel special and valued.”

For those who miss the commercial’s première on CTV tonight, Shenk said, the ad is meant to be available on the bank’s Facebook page.

If BMO put a little more energy to filling empty spaces behind their wickets so that their line-ups were kept to a manageable length, and less into self-promoting their boyish-looking screen-starlets, then they might gain a lot more credibility as a financial institution up here in the Yukon.

I'm glad to see that BMO is actually acknowledging it's Whitehorse branch! Congrats to this person who has clearly made an impact at this branch and seems to have changed it for the better.
