DAWSON CITY – The Department of Highways and Public Works is still monitoring the local ice bridge, and traffic is still running.

That includes the department’s dump trucks engaged in getting the snow piles off Front Street, which is part of the North Klondike Highway.

Last Sunday afternoon, the posting was updated to show the new weight limits, which dropped from 40,000 kg to 27,000 kg a week ago, and have now dropped to 10,000 kg.

The northern lane is still marked as closed, but the one to the south is seeing regular traffic.

“UPDATE: Due to favourable conditions the Dawson City ice bridge will remain open.

“Local crews have assessed that the road remains safe for light traffic. Colder temperatures are also expected over the next few days in Dawson City.

“It is our goal to keep the crossing open as long as conditions will allow.

“We will endeavour to provide as much notice as possible before closing the bridge for the season.”

Last year, the bridge was officially closed on April 16.
