Rod Taylor will not be seeking a seat in the Yukon’s legislature after all.
Rod Taylor will not be seeking a seat in the Yukon’s legislature after all.
Taylor announced Sunday he is moving to Campbell River, B.C. to better manage the demands of a growing business.
His prior plans included seeking the Liberal nomination for the riding of Porter Creek Centre.
Last month, he told reporters that his family would be moving to Porter Creek from their former home in Ibex Valley.
He is currently the chief executive officer for the International Ecotourism Development Corp., a company that creates eco-resorts and provides consultation services to the tourism industry.
“The company is doing well and demanding more and more attention on a daily basis,” he said in a statement.
“Unfortunately, I am no longer able to manage those demands from here. In moving to Campbell River, B.C. the arrangement I have made will also allow me to spend a significant amount of time in Ontario as required, in order to spend time with my parents and provide any needed support in the future.”
It was a tough decision to make, Taylor said.
“I continue to believe that Sandy and his team are the best option for Yukoners in the coming election,” he said, referring to Yukon Liberal Leader Sandy Silver.
“It was a very difficult conversation I had with him last week because I know how much he has invested in building the party in recent years,” Taylor said.
“He was very gracious, and that is another example of the kind of person he really is. He is building a strong team and the party is in great shape heading into an election year,” Taylor said.
“ ... I am sorry I will not be part of the Liberal slate in the election.”
Taylor added he still intends to be active “behind the scenes” until his departure to B.C. this summer.
Silver said in a statement he is disappointed with this turn of events.
“As Rod always says, it is what it is,” Silver said.
“While personally disappointed, I know Rod is doing what is best for his family, and I wish him well.”
The riding is held by the Yukon Party’s David Laxton, who is also the speaker of the legislature.
Two nomination meetings have been set in the first week of March for the ridings of Mount Lorne-Southern Lakes and Whitehorse Centre.
Former city councillor John Streicker is seeking a nomination in Mount Lorne-Southern Lakes, while Tamara Goeppel has her eyes set on Whitehorse Centre.
A Liberal party press release also notes another interested candidate will be making her intentions known this week.

Those of us who know Rod, know this is Yukon's loss. He is a smart, capable, principled and accomplished man. I wish him and his family well.
To those who immediately accuse people of flip flopping or being driven by opportunism when they change political parties: integrity means voting or supporting based on your core personal values, not following the party brand even when it offends those values.

As for this 'loyalty' that some people think is such a virtue, what does that mean? "I'll vote for you no matter what you do." and, "I will never vote for you no matter what you do."
Loyalty in politics? The point is that you push the parties toward positions that you believe in by making them earn your vote. Loyalty is about the dumbest thing you can give a political party if they have not earned it or if they destroy it.
Likewise for people who have been party members or candidates. If they see things they despise, and cannot change those things, by all means they should leave that party. They know better than anyone what they are leaving behind. Anyone who has lived in the Yukon for 20 years knows the Yukon Party is rife with the Old Boys (and I mean 'old' in some cases), and you are not going to change that if they can help it. How self-deprecating and self-defeating would a person have to be to say, 'I have to support these men, no matter what'?
I support the party and the candidate that looks to have the best platform and to be the best choice for the time and the situation. No politician or political party has my mindless, "Loyalty."

Sorry to see you go, Rod. You were extremely effective as the TIA president for several years (volunteer position I believe), and you were also equally effective in your leading role in 'Friends of Sima'.
You built a business from scratch, Uncommon Journeys, and did well at that as well.
Best of luck in your current endeavour and no harm done in realizing that out of fairness to everyone, you had to cut some bait in order to do a good job with your family and your existing business. You are a typical 'Entrepreneur', with lots of drive and ambition.
The Yukon is losing a person who contributed a lot of positive energy to this territory.

I fail to see the correlation between a person making a decision based on the best interests of his family to a negative reflection of his personality or moral compass...and certainly do not see how that effects the view of the party itself.
I know Rod, and he has probably known more success in his life than all of the negative commenters combined...how many successful companies have you started/been the CEO of??
The internet comment forums....the place for perfect people to hurl insults at someone they would never have the stones to say to their face.
And if you hate a person for changing parties, I assume you are simply loyal to the color of the tie and don't care who's running or the platform they are running on, and certainly don't care about how they would perform in the job....lifetime party loyalty is part of what is wrong with politics...IMO

Not sure why people have an issue seeing this for what it probably is. Would you not look after your family first....would you not choose an incredible guaranteed private sector opportunity that you put so much time into, vs the chance to serve in the Leg. for people who always complain about everything and are never happy? That is laughable. All the best to him, and his family. As far as the liberals and the election...couldn't really care which side wins to be honest....6 in one, half a dozen the other.

Now we just need Streiker to quit.. get some better stronger candidates running..
Except for 1 very good candidate, the Liberal line up is not looking very good.. on the other hand, I would vote for Three Toes Joe before I'd vote for another Conservative, and I don't care what anyone promises. Its past time for the YP to get out.

Rod Taylor is just one of many Yukon conservatives that have scurried away from the Yukon Party this past year. In this case, Sandy Silver shouldn't be too upset with Rod's change of heart. There will be other conservatives stepping up to fill his boots...

No big surprise here. He did the same thing with the Yukon Party after losing the nomination. Mr Silver should be happy that he quit because Mr Taylor would not of been happy unless he was the leader.

A better offer from the YP? No chance at the Liberal leadership. Oh right, Campbell River. Methinks this is a man who can't be trusted. His departure makes the Liberal party more appealing.

Taylor you are... on Feb 15, 2016 at 3:21 pm
a bit of a flip-flop. First you run for Leader of the Yukon Party - now the Liberals.
