Ranj Pillai, a former city councillor and past president of the Yukon Liberal Party, said this afternoon he will seek the party’s nomination for Porter Creek South in this year’s territorial election.

Although he lives in the Mountainview riding, Pillai told reporters, he is seeking the nomination in Porter Creek South because he knows the riding and the values it represents.

He’s coached sports at Porter Creek Secondary School for 15 years, and his eldest of two sons goes to the high school.

“Sandy Silver as the Yukon Liberal leader has what it takes to bring Yukoners back to the table and find common ground,” he said.

The 42-year-old held a noon-hour press conference at the top of Pine Street overlooking McIntyre Creek.

Pillai has served three terms as party president, most recently in 2015.

Russ Hobbis, a private businessman, is also seeking the Liberal nomination for the riding, which is currently held by Yukon Party cabinet minister Mike Nixon.

Pillai is the executive director for the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN). If he wins the Liberal nomination, he would take a leave without pay when the election is called.

Pillai served on city council from 2009 to 2012. He was largely responsible for bringing the Hockey Day in Canada show to Whitehorse, along with Don Cherry and Ron McLean.

For his involvement with Hockey Day in Canada, Pillai was given the Yukon Tourism Champion Award in 2011.

A very good candidate! I wish you luck. However, I am concerned at the low number of female candidates stepping forward. I truly hope that this is addressed before the election.

I know Ranj to be a solid, community minded individual. His integrity and honesty are beyond question. His election to the Yukon Legislative Assembly, as the Liberal MLA for Porter Creek South, will improve both the quality of decisions and discourse within the Legislative Assembly.

Congratulations Ranj! I am proud to count you as a friend and to support you in this effort. Yukon needs more like you!

No pleasing you June. Mr. Pillai has a proven record of both public sector and private sector work. He is active and visible in his community. He will work hard for everyone, as he did on City council. June, the tides they are a changing: grab a wave and prepare yourself for it. Positive governance is right around the corner.

Liberal, YP or NDP, no matter the political party, Ranj is a genuine person, wonderful young family. He has experience in so many arenas (business, politics, education, sports). He will be a great representative for the Yukon, either in power or opposition. Good luck and thanks for putting yourself out there.

Oh June, so bitter.....
Maybe we'll see YOU on the ballot? Or do you just like to pick apart the candidates without really offering any solutions?

Personally, I see Mr. Pillai as yet another weak contender. Liberals better pick up your game or I'll be getting to say... I told you so.. I told you you needed strong contends.. so far you only have 1.
