Liberals dismiss YP’s vaccines motion

The Yukon government has rejected a motion introduced by the Yukon Party aimed at sending a message to the federal government that it should provide residents in all three territories access to any vaccines at a more-than-per-capita basis.

By Tim Giilck on December 4, 2020

The Yukon government has rejected a motion introduced by the Yukon Party aimed at sending a message to the federal government that it should provide residents in all three territories access to any vaccines at a more-than-per-capita basis.

For the last week, the Yukon Party has been pressing the Liberal government on the question of vaccines

Representatives have been particularly concerned the territory might only receive as few as 3,300 doses of any of the proposed vaccines to start with. That’s not enough to treat essential workers and our most vulnerable people, the party has stated repeatedly.

The motion was introduced on an urgent emergency basis, and would have required all-party approval to be added to the order of business. The Liberal representatives refused to even allow the motion to be introduced for debate.

Afterward, Premier Sandy Silver criticized the opposition parties for the second time in a week.

“We have no interest in politicizing a vaccine,” he said.

“We have a Yukon Party that spent six weeks in filibusters. Last week, they had an opportunity to bring forth motions, and they chose to bring a motion on federal liquor taxes.

“Then they demand they want to be in on a conversation about vaccines. They’re a little bit late to the party,” Silver added.

We just saw the Yukon Party say as far as recommendations go, we’re going to pick and choose between what we like and what we don’t like. We’re not going to politicize the chief medical officer of health’s recommendations and we will not politicize the vaccine.”

The premier did agree the territories deserve special consideration when it comes to the vaccines.

Silver said it wouldn’t have made a difference if the motion had been brought forward by the NDP instead of the Yukon Party.

“We’re not interested in debating right now a motion on vaccines by the opposition. That includes both parties,” he said.

He told a media scrum his decision not to allow the motion to even be introduced wasn’t political in its own right, nor was it sparked by partisanship.

“I don’t think so,” Silver said. “I just don’t think so. If we thought they had a serious intent here to work with us, that might be a different situation.

“You just have to watch what the federal Tories are doing. It’s the same playbook. This is Currie O’Toole. It’s the same thing that’s playing out....”

Silver continued to refuse to provide any details on a vaccination plan.

“We get criticized when we don’t provide information on everything that hasn’t even been unpacked yet, and we get criticized if we do. I think we’ve struck a very good balance to give out information on a timely basis. We will have details very, very soon.”

He said he doesn’t have concerns about the pending distribution.

“I don’t have concerns right now on how the nation is working together to get this vaccine out.”

Silver said he is concerned that Yukon residents might abandon the conventional efforts to combat the virus if there was a specific date for the vaccinations to begin.

Seconds later, under media questioning, he said that had nothing to do with the lack of information on a vaccine distribution being provided by the government.

“We’re going to stop at the safe six. As of today, we need Yukoners to maintain physical distancing. We need you to keep on doing what you’ve been doing. We need vigilance right now. That’s what keeps me up at night.”

Silver then emphatically stated that’s not why he won’t announce the government plans.

“No,” he said. “Until people get vaccinated, I want people to be vigilant.”

Yukon Party Leader Currie Dixon said he was bewildered by the government’s refusal to even debate Thursday’s motion. He said he didn’t want to think it was due to partisan reasons.

“You’d have to ask the premier about that,” Dixon said.

NDP Leader Kate White was also at a loss to understand the Liberals’ rationale.

“We would have supported the motion, if given a chance,” she said.

Canada is buying 400 million doses of CV19. So we can't get any in Yukon???
40 million for Canadians? Who the other 360 million doses for? How much did tax payers pay for this CV19 vaccine? How the other 360 million doses going to? How are they going to be handled? Of the 400 million doses that Canada has supposedly ordered, do other countries get their doses before Canadians?

Rent cold storage units for the vaccine like they are doing in the US. This can be mobile units the size of a semi.

A majority does not make them right - but just arrogant enough to get their way. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" Lord Acton.

With per capita distribution the Yukon would only see 135 people receive it with the initial 250,000. Pfizer’s option doesn’t travel well and is less effective than the others who are also ramping up production and approval.

It’ll get here. Yukoners for whatever reason wax nostalgic about ‘Yukon time’ well, here it is.

Ok, so couple friends said I should clarify this no Flu Shot since 2001.
No I am not against it. In 2001 I had a flu shot, in my left outer arm. it felt like fire was being injected, my arm swelled up, my fingers tingled and the next day I became sick. I had a high fever and had to be cooled with ice packs and lost nearly 25 pounds in 3 days from perspiration. I was ill for 9 days total, I vomited, had diarrhea and couldn’t keep anything down. I lost my job because my employer thought I was full of crap. It triggered a few bad things in my life for a spell. It took me nearly 3 weeks to recuperate. I drank chicken and beef broths with rice till I could digest solids. It was the most horrible experience I have had in my life, doing what was supposed to make me immune and help me keep my job.
My wife and child get immunizations. So it’s not like it’s a religious thing or a anti-thing. I am just not willing to risk going through that again.
So thank you for understanding

I wish Sandy Silver would stop speculating on opposition parties' motives for the questions, and just assume they're asking on behalf of constituents. His bobbing and weaving is really confusing.

tmyk and the rest of the yuk con chicken littles, the liberals have a majority, regardless of covid or not this does not make it to the floor. Yukoners gave the Liberals a majority for a reason, the cons played this game all day long when they had the majority, now they scream bloody murder, hyprocrites!!

Interesting the only people politicizing this are the libs. And by the looks of it the territorial /fed lib connection is not that good as we're not gonna get any special treatment it appears. The opp parties are asking legitimate questions and they get roasted by the lib sheeple for doing so. Marxist–Leninist like.

The longer we are without the vaccine the longer the Libs can maintain their "State of Emergency" and run the government with no oversight or accountability.

"Currie O’Toole" Hahaha I'm dying laughing.

The rubes in the YuCon party will argue about the colour of the sky if you let them.
Here's the deal, NO jurisdiction on the planet will initially receive enough vaccine to get every man woman and child twice (which is required) In the case of the Yukon that would be 86,000 doses.

We will receive vaccine, as it becomes available and it will be directed to the healthcare workers and vulnerable first and then the rest of us. If it were my choice (and it isn't) Conservatives who are politicizing the pandemic and everything around it would be last and I'd opt out the anti-vax crowd and the local mouth breathers who think masks are stealing their freedum.

There are 13 different health care regimes in Canada and we are so geographical spread out, this vaccine is going to be hard to roll out especially the 'vaccine' type which is purchased i.e. one that requires low temperatures to maintain stability. The YP should be asking how YTG will maintain the low temperatures required? Who will be vaccinated first, second, third? Where the vaccines will be stored, we can't have freezers all over the territory can we? Have they sent out contracts for installation of these freezers? Finally, if people have had COVID, they will have antibodies to the virus ergo it is very unlikely a vaccine will be required, so will there be antibody testing to remove those who do not require the vaccine?

This mass, costly, vaccination needs to efficient on all levels and no Government should eff this up. The whoops, my bad, is not an excuse.

One last thing on this vaccine thing. I won't be taking it anyway, so Silvers and his libs can have it all when and if it comes. I'll take my chances without it.

Here’s my question, what if we don’t plan to be vaccinated? I haven’t had a flu shot since 2001.

The Yukon border has been closed to keep us safe. We have returned to a 14 day self isolation order if we choose to travel outside the Yukon. This has severely limited our personal freedom.

These orders have been made for our collective safety because we are isolated here in the North with limited resources. Given that, it makes sense that the entire North receives the vaccine all at once, in the first few months.

EJ:
You need to read the article again. The motion didn't even make it to the agenda. HRH would not permit it ! Just in case you missed it, or perhaps a tad lazy to go back, I will note it here: "The motion was introduced on an urgent emergency basis, and would have required all-party approval to be added to the order of business. The Liberal representatives refused to even allow the motion to be introduced for debate."

I know it is hard for Liberals to understand the concepts of democracy. I don't know why they behave this way. One only needs to look at Ottawa and the shenanigans your buddies pull each and every day. However you are a true creature of the party and will lash out instead at everyone else!

If anything we don't need any of the vaccine first. We can be easily isolated from the rest of the country which is having real problems. It's not like we aren't bailing out everyone and everything up here anyway.

If this is an accurate report (and it likely is), Silvers main concern is controlling the message. I think we have come to expect that.
After Justin spent the last four years pompously lecturing China on human rights, arresting and jailing their higher-profile citizens, and doing all he could to offend and humiliate them, he expects them to sell us their Covid vaccine as a priority? That is more than naive. He puts Canadians future at risk in order to massage his ego (he's doing it again in India right now!). This isn't funny anymore.
And Sandy is taking us where he is told to.

John I think you have the Liberals confused with the NDP.

Oh and voting down a motion means nothing. The Yukon Party was likely just looking for some credit for something in advance of the vaccine being rolled out. Just politics as usual.

Our Premier has had 8 months to deal with a once in a century problem. He has chosen to do it alone with his party. Fine. Deal with the consequences. He made it partisan. A bit late to cry chicken.

This is the height of arrogance.

“We’re not interested in debating right now a motion on vaccines by the opposition. That includes both parties,” Silver then goes on to tell the media, "...his (Silver) decision not to allow the motion..." Now isn't this ducky. He gets to decide how democracy will function (or more importantly his brand of democracy like the idiot in Ottawa). Sounds more autocratic to me - not democratic. Hmm there is something very wrong with this picture - really !

“The premier did agree the territories deserve special consideration when it comes to the vaccines.”

Ummmm, why? Not sure why this is the statement everyone seems to blindly accept. How about we just stand with the entire country and take our doses in equal per-capita allocation? Is there a evidence-based justification or is it just more ‘me first’? Healthcare, education, emergency services, transport and public-facing employees in any sector should be a priority. A lottery to give folks hope and displace widespread opposition to bureaucrats deciding everything would be a good idea. Leave some chance in the mix. A lottery can’t be worse than whatever a YG committee would come up with.

When all this pandemic is said and done and the reviews and assessments completed, it will be very clear who was at fault for the errors made, the lives lost, the businesses dissolved and the other issues that will come to light because of pig-headed Liberals to frightened to admit they don't know everything.

I see the Con-trolls are out in force today. Take a lesson from the Whitehorse mayor and avoid preemptive nastiness. It's fine to criticize when there's an actual reason, but the spate of speculative invective coming from the federal Cons lately doesn't need to be replicated here.

Well, Silvers is learning well from his master JT in Ottawa - keep the people in the dark. Shut down debate with the opposition and blame it on Covid. So much for Liberals promise of transparency. And you can bet, when a vaccine does arrive sometime in the future, Silvers and his lackeys will be the first to get it.

It's the liberal way or no way. Similar to Marxist–Leninist socialist state like Cuba...wait maybe there's a connection.
