Don Inverarity, the Liberal MLA for Porter Creek South, is running for re-election.

"I've gained a lot of experience over the past five years,” Inverarity said in a statement Monday.

"I want to thank the residents of Porter Creek South for their overwhelming support to date and their continued support into the future.”

Inverarity won the riding by just six votes in the 2006 election. He collected 304 votes, besting the Yukon Party's Dean Hassard, who drew 298 votes, and the New Democrats' Samson Hartland, who garnered 97 votes.

Inverarity has held several critic roles over his five-year term as an MLA with the official Opposition, including for the Departments of Tourism and Culture, Justice, Highways and Public Works, and the territorial workers' compensation health and safety board.

In his role as the Highways and Public Works critic, Inverarity spent two years encouraging the government to implement a new secure driver's licence for the Yukon.

"We heard lots of horror stories from Yukoners whenever they travelled outside of the territory,” Inverarity said. "It was a lot of work to get the government to change its mind, but it just goes to show you that it can be done.”

Inverarity also contributed to a number of legislative committees. Those include the select committees on anti-smoking legislation, human rights, and the safe operation and use of off-road vehicles.

"Select committees are excellent learning opportunities for everyone involved,” Inverarity said. "When lawmakers want to fundamentally change our lives, nothing becomes more important than public consultation and buy-in before proceeding.”

Inverarity is a long-time Yukoner and businessman. He has been involved in the Porter Creek Community Association, the Klondike International Road Relay, and is an amateur radio operator. He describes himself as strong on family values.

"Community matters to me,” he said.

"I'm looking forward to speaking with all of my constituents again this summer about issues that affect our neighbourhood.”

Porter Creek South was the only riding to return a Liberal in the 2002 election – former Liberal premier Pat Duncan, who did not run in 2006.
