Liberal incumbent secures narrow election victory

Liberal incumbent Larry Bagnell will serve a sixth term as the Yukon’s member of Parliament after winning a tight race Monday.

By Gabrielle Plonka on October 22, 2019

Liberal incumbent Larry Bagnell will serve a sixth term as the Yukon’s member of Parliament after winning a tight race Monday.

The Liberal camp picked up 33.5 per cent of the vote in Yukon, or 7,035 votes.

Conservative hopeful Jonas Smith trailed closely behind, with 32.7 per cent, or 6,871 votes.

New Democrat Justin Lemphers finished in third place with 4,617 votes or 21.9 per cent of the ballots.

The Green Party’s Lenore Morris earned 2,201 votes, placing fourth.

People’s Party candidate Joseph Zelezny finished in fifth place with 284 votes.

Bagnell celebrated the win at Antoinette’s restaurant in downtown Whitehorse with about 60 supporters.

“It’s a victory that we can help those people in need. That’s what it’s all about. That’s what Liberals stand for,” he said.

Bagnell committed to continuing work on poverty reduction, affordability and climate action.

He gave a special shout-out to Yukoners living in rural communities in his victory speech.

“I got your back,” he said. “Nationally, this is a great victory so we can … help the working poor, help the single mothers, help the environment.”

Bagnell told reporters he was not expecting the victory, and worried the strong Conservative base in Yukon would sully his chances for re-election.

Facing being a member of a minority government, Bagnell said he hopes the Liberal Party will “do our part of good listening and good co-operating” in order to carry out a successful term.

Even as cheerful Liberal supporters began to trickle out of Antoinette’s Monday night, an air of uncertainty hovered over Bagnell’s victory.

Smith, did not concede the election until Tuesday morning, knowing there were more than 500 ballots that would not be counted until Tuesday.

“It is a democracy, and the people are always right, so we might have to wait a few more hours to see how right the people were,” he told election night supporters.

When the final polling station was counted Monday night, Smith was only sitting 75 votes behind Bagnell.

The additional 533 ballots ultimately narrowed the gap and Smith settled into second place with 6,871 votes.

“I am very proud of the team from coast to coast to coast for all of our efforts,” Smith told a disappointed but enthusiastic gathering at his election night headquarters at the Coast High Country Inn.

“We all rallied behind trying to make life more affordable for Canadians.”

Smith spent time thanking his supporters and those who worked on his campaign.

He told the audience there have been many nights over the last year he’s not been home to help his wife, Erika, with their young children.

“So thank you for putting up with me, especially in the last four hours,” said the 45-year-old Conservative in obvious reference to Monday night’s close ballot count, which could have gone either way right to the end.

“I definitely want to thank Mr. Bagnell for his continuing service to the Yukon.”

With one poll still to be reported last night, New Democrat Justin Lemphers took the stage at North of Ordinary and addressed the crowd, which was standing-room-only. Sitting squarely in third place, Lemphers was heralded with chants of "N-D-P, N-D-P" from his supporters.

When the crowd settled to silence, Lemphers addressed the future of the NDP in Yukon.

"All right, folks, this has been one hell of a journey and you know what? We kicked ass!" said Lemphers.

"Just look at those numbers this evening. That is a lot of people who cared deeply about what happens in this territory. This is a lot of people who know what the future needs to look like.

"We are so close. This journey is only the beginning of a step. This journey is not over."

Just a few blocks away, at the Waterfront Station Business Centre, Morris was in high spirits as she watched the results trickle in.

Morris was not surprised by the result. She said Bagnell has a loyal following that supports him.

Nationally, she explained that the Green Party’s accruement of three seats in the House of Commons is a gain for the party, though it wasn’t the breakthrough they were hoping for.

The party had two seats when Parliament dissolved.

Morris explained that her party is small but received a large percentage of the popular vote, an outcome that didn’t translate into the winning of many seats.

She said this is why the party is a proponent of changing to a mixed proportional representation electoral system from the current first-past-the-post system.

“We’re the party that most wants proportional representation,” she said.

There was high voter turnout in Yukon, with 72.8 per cent of eligible voters showing up at the polls. This dropped slightly from the 75.8 per cent turnout experienced in the 2015 election.

Voter turnout hit 66 per cent Canada-wide.

@Dave Alberta tried to blackmail the country into voting for the conservatives. Luckily most Yukoners refused to give in to bullying, though it obviously worked on you. Your response shows how triggered you are.

Selfish Liberal Yukoners once again allowed themselves to be bought and proved it’s all about them. Among other things these Liberal hypocrites overlooked Trudeau’s racism, his interference with the attorney generals office, his lies concerning electoral reform. Liberal voters proved that as long as their guy gets in, they’ll take a pile of steaming pile of s—- and call it dinner. They didn’t care if Trudeau’s re-election ends up splitting this country in two, which I believe has now been set in motion.
Liberal voters in Yukon squarely stabbed Alberta in the back, which is the source of much of the funding that keeps Yukon going. All I can say is you get what you deserve so enjoy that regurgitated has been you put back in as MP. You can thank a Liberal voter every time you pay more each year going forward for groceries, gasoline, heating and everything else in your life courtesy of Trudeau’s carbon tax. This country is now fragmented and broken like never before and the end of Canada as we know it is now within sight thanks to this election.

You've got a great many varied opinions in there. Personally, I don't envy the position our leaders are in. They make difficult decisions under highly nuanced circumstances which are always compromises or half-measures and can never make everyone happy. If Trudeau had not bought the TMX I suspect LPC would have another majority government, but many Albertans would be just as upset, so in hindsight was it a good decision? Politically, probably not but it may still have been the right decision... frankly ask me in 5 years.

The rhetoric going around is disturbing to me largely due to the lack of substance required before people repeat something they heard as fact en masse. Case in point is "He blew NAFTA" which is an opinion I've heard a lot, even from Mr. Scheer. I know little about strategy or nuance involved in trade policies. It speaks to things like "one-half percent ad valorem equivalent value of the trade facilitation provisions by all partners" - bleck. So I defer to the informed opinions of others who know more about these topics. Broadly the CUSMA has the support of a great many analysts who know these topics and even would-be skeptics like Brian Mulroney and Rona Ambrose. Andrew Scheer, for his part, should have been well briefed on this highly important topic and yet whenever pressed to attach substance or action to his claim he either would not or could not. The agreement has NOT been ratified and Mr. Scheer could have committed to re-open negotiation, if elected, and sought a better deal in which he had described Canada as having been taken to the cleaners. Again, when pressed on what he'd do, change, accept, etc. he appeared wholly incompetent like a doe in the headlights "uhm, uhm, I would have gotten Canada a better deal". That's helpful, I can also claim, without time machine or opportunity, that I too could have gotten Canada a better deal! Sure, why not?

If you're interested in peeling back the rhetoric and gaining deeper insights, the IMF has produced an independent qualitative analysis of the changes and potential impacts of the CUSMA.

You're welcome to your opinions, but hopefully you respect that they are opinions shared by some and not by others. As for me, do I think LPC blew it on NAFTA? I don't honestly know, ask me in 10 years after it's been ratified and I can reasonably tell you what has been working and what hasn't (and there will be some of both).

Actually there was no conviction for terrorism, it was a war crime. With General Romeo Dellaire calling it a farce as he should have been considered a child soldier and not prosecuted at all.

The charge was a Trumped up affair where George bush created a law that the killing of any American soldier is considered a war crime, but conservatives keep feeding into the Terrorism narrative because its just too easy.

Your choice of language and focus on the $$$$$ indicate that you are not able to understand that assisting one group does not mean that another group can also receive assistance. The pipeline purchase, I agree was silly, imagine purchasing this to appease a bunch of ingrates, all it did was back fire and really showed how its impossible to make a group of people who feel entitled happy.

The transfer payment formula, was established during Harpers government and guess who was the chief architect . That's right Jason Kenny, and imagine the same entitled ingrates later elect him....go figure.

Thank you so much for your replies. Davis: you asked what I saw. I sent in this short list before and the Star kindly printed.. (they declined to print the other 18 pages, but they have it.) I think, debate.. trying to see through anothers eyes is a good thing. This is what I saw. I did think Scheer was weak, he lacked resonance with me, but, he is squeaky clean...ok..why I did not vote for Trudeau:

-Trudeau sold NORSAT to China against all security advice.
-Trudeau sold all of the assisted living, BC retirement home change to China.
-The minister of finance, Bill Morneau, engaged in insider trading
-Morneau forgot he had a millions dollar mansion in France, and shared a corporation with his wife
-He blew the Asia Pacific deal.
-He blew the helicopter deal with the Philippines.
-He blew the pipeline deal.
-He blew the deal with China.
-He blew the deal with Europe.
-He blew NAFTA
-He harmed our international relationships, especially the US, our biggest trading partner
-He word smithed illegal entry to irregular entry, with thousands flooding into Canada on our southern border. He had to pay off Quebec residents in Montreal.
-At the G7 he pledged $400 Million to Education around the world along with another
$180 Million to the Global Partnership for Education in Europe. None of it is going to fix our messed up school systems here at home. Meanwhile education costs are skyrocketing for our youth making university a mountain too high for many to climb.
-He eliminated almost all deductions, family income sharing for stay at home moms, text book deductions for students, activity and creativity deductions for children.
-Increased personal income taxes every year.
-He said he would help the middle class, but with all the deductions, they actually paid $2,400 a year more in taxation.
-He pledged $241 Million to Family Planning around the world including a
$20 Million donation to the Bill and Hillary Clinton Foundation (because they have integrity!). This all happened while he told vets that they were asking too much.
-He pledged $2.65 Billion to climate change at the Commonwealth Leaders Summit and now he is trying to bully the provinces into new taxes to pay for this pledge.
-He pledged $300 Million to the Rohingya Refugee crisis while we have a refugee crisis of our own flooding into Quebec that he won't address.
-He pledged $125 Million to Caribbean Reconstruction while our own infrastructure in cities is falling apart.
-He pledged $650 million to Sexual and Reproductive health in Haiti and around the globe wanting safer abortions for woman while many women in our own country are left without a family doctor.
-He has pledged $50 million to Palestine for flood relief when NB had some of the worst flooding in decades this past spring.
-He pledged $840 million to Syria for Humanitarian Assistance when half the native reserves in our country don't have clean drinking water.
-He gave $10.5 Million to a convicted...CONVICTED terrorist in a backroom deal that has lead to another $30.8 Million paid out for three other fellers who say they were wrongfully detained.
-And just recently he spent $4.5 Billion on a pipeline, and now the courts have ruled it shut down. Good investment for Canada he said.
-Pressured Jody Wilson Raybould repeatedly & inappropriately with several different high ranking officials to offer SNC Lavalin a DPA instead of prosecution for repeated & sustained corruption after the former AG had determined they were ineligible for such a deal. Lied about the above having ever taken place.
-Replaces Canada’s old F-18s with Australia’s old F-18s.
-His love of all things Castro and all things Red China.
-Imposes tough regulations and taxes on oil from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland but not oil from Saudi Arabia.
-Every new project has to undergo strict environmental assessments...except cement plants in Quebec.
-Says that a proposed pipeline must consider “the intersection of sex and gender with other identity factors” (what does that even mean???)
-He publically stated that he thinks older Canadians should be replaced.
-Chases foreign companies (and their investment capital) out of the country like they have the plague.
-Chases our WW1 soldiers out of our national anthem... lest we forget.
-Continuously uses identity politics...then complains about identity politics.
-“Forgot” Alberta was a province in his Canada Day speech.
-Called small business owners “tax cheats”.
-We have an equalization program but he gives half of it to one province.
-$8 million for a skating rink. Vanity money waste
-$4.5 billion for a 65 year old pipeline (and KM uses that money to build a pipeline in Texas)
-1.5 trillion in debt Federally and Provincially. He promised to balance the budget by 2019. Now says 2040. Economists say 2054. And now he’s been re elected.
-Gets India to invest $250 million in Canada but we have to invest $750 million in India first.
-Brings ISIS army men back to Canada to live among the people they were killing.
-Lets Terrorists keep their Canadian citizenship.
-Thinks Canada is 100 years old instead of 150.
-Gave Canadian taxpayer’s money to Hamas. Hamas is a Palestinian terrorist organization that ran for election and got voted into power in Palastine.
-Spent a little over $1.5 million on the trip to India that did nothing but worsen ties. Plus paid over $17,000 to Vikram Vij, a chef from Vancouver to prepare a meal for a meeting in New Delhi.
And I haven't even talked about Jody or Khadr.

They never clued into the fact that it was all a revenge scam by MadMax to keep Scheer from winning. They brought a whole new meaning to "Special Kind of Stupid".

This was especially true in the Yukon where the LIB won by 164 votes. Max's 284 Yukon Mutineers gave it to JT.

@Juniper
I voted Liberal because 1) Trudeau kept every single promise that was important to me from the 2015 election. and 2) Larry is a known quantity who has consistently represented Yukon very well.

I am squarely in the middle-class and can share that I have benefited from LPC tax policies significantly. CPC's platform would have put more money in my pocket. Tax policy ranked near the bottom of my list of priorities with environment at the very top this election. So frankly, CPC's platform had almost nothing in it that was important to me. I like Jonas and could have conceivably voted for him, but when he told me CPC would axe the carbon tax I simply asked "ok, and do what?" ... the look on his face told me everything I needed to know.

If my vote were to go to any other party it would likely have gone to NDP though was very impressed with Lenore Morris... so CPC, under Scheer would have been my 4th ranked pick this year.

@ Juniper Jackson - There was a recount of the votes, which resulted in Larry winning by an even larger margin.

To clarify, Larry/Trudeau are not promising to ban all guns, they are simply trying to restrict people from accessing handguns and assault guns, neither of which are used for hunting here in the north, so how would that have any effect on our northern way of life? Wouldn't change anything for your typical hunter.

As for the conservative tax cuts, they would have been for everyone equally - why do the rich need a tax break? They would have cut taxes by $49B nationally, which would have mostly been recuperated by cuts to existing programs and initiatives (public services), all so that the average Canadian would save $444 annually on taxes. How is that even close to being worth it? I would much rather have those billions of dollars worth of public services than cut my taxes by several hundred dollars a year.

It's not that I really like Trudeau, he wasn't actually my first choice to be honest, but I would much rather the Liberals be in power than the Conservatives. I could ask you the same question, why did you vote conservative? What do you see in them that you like? Conservatives are typically all about fiscal responsibility, but when Stephen Harper was in power his government ran the biggest deficit this country has ever seen.

Are you sure you know what you're talking about? Some basic facts...
1) Imigration is merely maintaining Canada's population growth of 1.2%, more or less inline with CPC's policy.
2) The vast majority of immigrants admitted in the past 4 years haven't yet met citizenship requirements to vote.
3) LPC lost well over a million votes this election.

He didn't even phone him. This is a longstanding gesture of goodwill and respect in politics. Not doing so shows a lack of class and maturity. We can't dismiss the true fact that the Trudeau government changed the demographics of Canada and the Yukon with their immigration program that began immediately after his 2015 win. Hundreds of thousands of immigrants from the Middle East and Asia gave the Liberals many seats. I also believe it helped greatly to get Bagnall elected again. But we know it won't end there. Trudeau said he will bring in several millions more from the same areas. Trust me folks, get used to a Liberal government in Canada and Yukon for many decades to come. Dirty pool you say? Here's a little number crunching for you, when you combine the numbers, those who voted right wing would equal 7055 votes or 33.74%, and those that voted left wing would be 13853 votes or 66.26% clearly portrays Yukon as a progressive voter base, however you sure wouldn't see that from the repeated rabid conservatisms seen on the comments section.
