Lengthy pecking orders formed for KFC treats
Fried chicken featuring the Colonel's secret blend of 11 herbs and spices is back on the menu for many Whitehorse residents
Fried chicken featuring the Colonel's secret blend of 11 herbs and spices is back on the menu for many Whitehorse residents after KFC reopened its doors Wednesday.
"Things are going really well,” Peter Allen, who now owns the local fast food franchise with wife Joy, said in an interview this morning.
After opening with a new look and landscaping for the Second Avenue building on Wednesday, customers patiently waited for their favourite KFC goodies – deep-fried chicken, whether extra crispy or the original recipe, French fries, cole slaw and so many other menu items.
While many went into the redone restaurant for their chicken, others were willing to sit in the drive-through line that wound its way around corners.
Some used their time in line to post on social media sites about the reopening, reporting waiting nearly an hour at supper time for their chicken fix.
Others declared they would hold off until another day when the lineup wasn't so long, and still there were other posts finding the humour in waiting so long for food that's supposed to be fast.
While waiting times varied through the day, Allen estimated customers were averaging about a half-hour wait.
"It was moving,” he said of the long lineups. He's heard of other KFC openings that were less busy but had customers waiting even longer for their food.
Obviously, as time goes on, customers will be served more quickly by the more than 40 employees at the restaurant, he said, noting the response to the reopening has been good.
Not only are people happy to welcome the Colonel's chicken back to Whitehorse, but they've also told him they're "blown away” by the new look and landscaping done to the site.
Allen noted he and Joy have put a lot of time and effort into making the property aesthetically pleasing.
As was reported earlier this year, the Allens bought the property for just under $1 million.
The previous owners shut down the restaurant three years ago.

The exterior looks fantastic...way nicer than the KFC's back in Calgary (moved here last year).
