City council has adopted a lease arrangement with the Whistle Bend Community Garden Society for an area measuring an estimated 1,000 square metres.

Council voted unanimously at its meeting Monday to accept the lease agreement.

The society will be required to pay the city an annual lease fee of $10. It will also be required to obtain $2 million in liability insurance.

The garden society will be expected to bear all costs associated with the operation and maintenance of the garden area.

The area is zoned greenbelt, which allows for community gardens and greenhouses.

The lease states no parking nor vehicle access will be allowed on the adjacent paved laneway.

An administrative report prepared for council says the site is expected to be fenced.

It will have garden boxes, a water tank and a storage building for soil and tools.

It’s expected the Whistle Bend garden will function similarly to the Downtown Urban Garden located on Seventh Avenue, says the report.

Working with the garden society, the city identified the garden site.

To prove this project isn't just green 'window dressing' it would be beneficial if COW had a city water connection on site.

At the old location (that was unceremonious ripped from underneath the association) it was either the association paid for water delivery or a nearby neighbour ran a long garden hose across the street to fill the tank or people trucked in their own water in jugs.

COW be serious about green/sustainable neighbourhoods especially in this showcase neighbourhood.
