Nils Clarke will be on the campaign trail after winning the nomination to represent the Liberals in Riverdale North for the upcoming territorial election.
Clarke secured the nomination in a vote held Tuesday evening at the Coast High Country Inn, Liberal campaign chair Laura Cabott confirmed this morning.
Sunny Patch, another resident of the riding, was also seeking the nomination.
The party does not provide full voting results from contested nominations. Cabott did say 224 eligible voters attended, with 215 ballots cast.
Clarke, who could not be reached for comment before press time today, is the executive director of theYukon Legal Services Society.
He has been involved with the Liberal party since 1984, and has lived in the riding he’s now running in for close to 25 years.
“The Yukon and specifically Riverdale North has been an amazing place to grow personally and professionally, and to raise our sons,” he said when he announced his intention to seek the nomination in June.
“I feel this decision to seek public office is a natural extension of my ongoing commitment to contribute and lead in our dynamic and diverse territory.”
In that announcement, he emphasized his commitment to continue working to improve social outcomes for First Nations children and adults throughout the territory.
He also expressed concerns over what he described as an “alarming rate” at which the Yukon Party government has fired deputy ministers – and the financial costs associated with severance packages and the like.
Those payouts are concealed from the public, but can be many scores of thousands of dollars for each dismissed DM.
Clarke argued that money could be better used for programs for children at-risk.
He also cited his support for pursuing alternative energy options, ranging from micro hydro to geothermal and solar.
Once the territorial election is called, Clarke will be up against the Yukon Party’s Mark Beese and the NDP’s Rod Snow for the seat.
The riding is currently held by Scott Kent of the Yukon Party.
Kent is seeking re-election, but in the riding of Copperbelt South after recently moving to Marsh Lake. Lois Moorcroft of the NDP is that riding’s incumbent.

I was at the nomination meeting, and I must say that it was a very refreshing, positive experience. Sunny Patch was another excellent potential candidate, and should be commended for stepping forward. Her speech was heartfelt and positive. We were lucky to have two people such as these come forward. It's too bad Scott Kent burned his bridges and went to the YP. I voted for Scott ever time he ran, even in the last election when he was YP. Time to move forward.

Congratulations Nils welcome to Team Liberal where you join a very strong field of Liberal candidates such as Don Hutton, Ernie Jamieson, Jeane Lassen, Ranj Pillai, Tracey McPhee, Nils Clarke, Jeanie Dendys, Jocelyn Curteanu, Paolo Gallina, Pauline Frost, John Streicker, Mathieya Alatini, Sandy Silver, Raj Murugaiyan, Ted Adel, Alan Young, Richard Mostyn, Tammara Goeppel and last but not least Mike Tribes. I think Pelly-Nisutlin is an open ticket for the Liberals.
