Late, over-budget hospital is subject of lawsuit
A subcontractor that worked on the new Dawson City hospital has filed a lawsuit in Yukon Supreme Court claiming it's owed more than $80,000 in unpaid bills.
A subcontractor that worked on the new Dawson City hospital has filed a lawsuit in Yukon Supreme Court claiming it's owed more than $80,000 in unpaid bills.
Subcontractor Dennis Smith Construction filed the paperwork this week against the project's primary contractor, Dowland Contracting Ltd.
The Yukon Hospital Corp., which owns the land upon which the hospital is being built, is also named as a defendant in the case.
According to court documents, the subcontractor was hired by Dowland Contracting in August 2012 for the hospital project. It worked on exterior siding, trims, soffits with bug screens and fascia.
The work was completed last November, the documents say.
A month later, the subcontractor filed a lien for the money.
Dennis Smith Construction is now asking the court to order the contractor pay the $80,932.68, plus interest.
As for the hospital corporation, the lawsuit is asking the court to rule the subcontractor is entitled to a lien against the property.
No statements of defence have been filed in the case.
The parties are scheduled to have a case management conference in April.
The cost of the 28,000-square-foot hospital has spent considerable time in the news.
The new facility was scheduled be completed in the fall of 2012 at a cost $26.5 million.
Health and Social Services Minister Doug Graham told the legislature last October the cost of the total project, including the equipment required to run the hospital, will be in the neighbourhood of $29.7 million.
At the time, Graham said the hospital was scheduled to be completed in late December or early January.
It has yet to be completed.
In December 2012, the hospital corporation said the hospital should be up and running by May 2013.
An Auditor General of Canada's report on the hospital corporation's capital projects is scheduled to be released at the end of February.
