Senator Dan Lang says that when the Auditor General of Canada’s review of Senate expenses is complete, he’s “confident that Yukoners will find that I have acted in good faith and in keeping with Senate policies and practices.”
Lang’s office issued a statement this morning in response to a CTV News story first aired Tuesday.
The story alleged he repaid money after auditors questioned him about a flight that appeared unrelated to Senate business.
Lang did not confirm that to CTV, nor did he confirm it to the Star this morning.
“Owing to the confidentiality agreement between the Office of the Auditor General and individual senators, I am unable to comment on the substance of the audit at this time,” Lang said in the statement.
The Office of the Auditor General declined to provide details about the confidentiality clause, or the audit itself.
“The work is ongoing, and any details regarding our scope, progress and methodology will not be discussed while the work is ongoing,” wrote spokesperson Ghislain Desjardins
“We do not speculate about audit findings, or how they will be presented.”
Auditor General Michael Ferguson is reviewing senators’ expenses between April 1, 2011, to March 31, 2013. The audit began in the fall of 2013, and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Lang said the audit of his office has begun.
It’s his understanding, he said, there are multiple phases to it: first, the auditor general raises “general questions” as a result of its first review of a Senate office.
Second, the auditor general requests a meeting with the office to “to address any areas requiring further clarification.”
In the third phase, Ferguson would provide his findings in the form of a letter and hold a discussion with the senator’s office, Lang said.
Lastly, the auditor general “would seek sign-off from the Senator with respect to any findings.”
Lang said his office has completed the first phase of the audit, and responded “in full” to Ferguson’s questions last December.
“At this point, and to the best of my understanding, the Office of the Auditor General has yet to commence the second phase of the audit of my office,” Lang said.
The auditor general’s website states that a meeting with each senator is held when the audit of his or her expenses begins.
Citing anonymous sources, CTV News reported that at least 40 current and former senators have received confidential letters from Ferguson about questionable expense claims.
One was asked to account for more than $100,000, the network reported.
When approached by CTV Ottawa bureau chief Robert Fife on Tuesday, several senators declined to comment, some citing a confidentiality clause in the audit.
Meanwhile, the RCMP levelled new allegations against suspended senator Pamela Wallin today.
They allege she fabricated Senate business in order to get reimbursed for personal expenses.
No charges have been laid.
RCMP have charged former Conservative senators Mike Duffy and Patrick Brazeau, as well as retired Liberal senator Mac Harb, with making fraudulent expense claims.
Duffy’s trial will begin next Tuesday in Ottawa.

The real issue is trust.
Squirrels in someone's house is a distraction. Think about how Dans brother helped the golf course. Dan has apparently paid the money back.
All is well.

It Is what It Is--I believe that wasn't Dan Lang but his brother with the squirrels in the house. Or both?

If I recall correctly from the news coverage at the time, the house was owned by Danny's brother Archie Lang. It may well be that Danny sold the house for him as he was a realtor. Either way both knew about the squirrel problem and I believe there was a lawsuit over it. No, I wouldn't buy a used car from him or anything else for that matter but I don't think he has to worry about money these days.
Abolish the Senate I say!

Would you buy a used car from this man? Don't need a car? Well how about a house that the squirrels have destroyed the insulation with full awareness of the situation but non disclosure. Ah, ethics are something that cannot be compromised.

Danny will be 100% cleared on this one!
Apparently Danny's staff were busy drafting amendments to a number of bills which affected the north and Mike Duffy's admin assistant was checking and submitting Danny's travel claims.
The disparity comes from what Senator Dan Lang would submit for travel expenses vs what Senator Mike Duffy felt comfortable submitting. As soon as Senator Lang was informed of the discrepancy he repaid the personal travel.
All is well now!

Ah that is the smile of an individual that has been scooping from the Public Trough for an awful long time!
Will be interesting to see what the auditor finds.

"...acted in good faith." That is to say if he cheated, he didn't mean to.

I'm sure Dans comments were just an unfortunate choice of words, he's no orator. I sincerely hope no irregularities are found.
It's kind of a no brainer, but we don't need to get rid of the senate, we, or the PM, just need to appoint good senators.

"Senator Dan Lang says that when the Auditor General of Canada’s review of Senate expenses is complete, he’s “confident that Yukoners will find that I have acted in good faith and in keeping with Senate policies and practices.”"
Senate policy and practice have apparently encouraged Senators to loot the public coffers at will.. The Senate is not elected, it's a reward that the sitting government, (Harper and the Con's) bestow on their faithful followers. Karma is a *itch Mr. Lang.

I'm sure it was all a simple misunderstanding. He was just putting the public money back where it belonged after being reminded about the paltry sum. Nothing to see here folks, move along.
