Land development protocol urged for all communities

WATSON LAKE The Yukon government should come up with a land development protocol with every municipality in the territory, not just Whitehorse.

That was a concern expressed by Haines Junction's Mike Crawshay to Community Services Minister Glenn Hart and fellow Association of Yukon Communities (AYC) members last week.

Speaking at the AYC's annual general meeting, Crawshay said communities are looking for some direction from the government on land disposition.

'I think it has some relevance for all the municipalities. I think this is something that AYC is part of, not just Whitehorse.

'These problems exist outside of Whitehorse as well,' Crawshay said.

At the AYC meeting, Hart told association members he was no longer able to answer any land-related questions as he has stepped away from those responsibilities due to a potential conflict of interest.

Last month, Hart went to Conflicts Commissioner David Phillip Jones with his concerns.

Those concerns centred around the minister's shares in the Meadow Lakes Golf and Country Club in Whitehorse.

Club co-owner Jeff Luehmann is currently going through a city Official Community Plan amendment process with the aim of having approximately 20 hectares of land, currently leased by Meadow Lakes for a golf course extension, rezoned for residential purposes.

Meadow Lakes is also seeking to purchase the property.

Whitehorse councillor Doug Graham has opposed the application. He doesn't feel allowing Meadow Lakes to purchase the property and build houses on it is fair considering the lease held by the Meadow Lakes owners is for a golf course, not for housing.

Graham said he doesn't feel any form of land disposition is fair or equitable.

During the AYC meeting, Hart said all further land inquiries are being directed to Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Archie Lang.

Hart said at the meeting while he couldn't speak for Lang, a letter would be forwarded to each member addressing their land disposition concerns.

Lang was unavailable for comment.
