Lake waters continuing to recede

Lake levels are continuing to drop – but slowly.

Lake levels are continuing to drop – but slowly.

Bennett Lake has gone down 13.7 centimetres below the peak earlier this summer, and is now 2.9 centimetres above the peak of the 2007 flood year, according to the most recent data.

Tagish Lake has gone down 11.7 centimetres from the peak and Marsh Lake has gone 15.4 centimetres and is now 7.3 centimetres above the 2007 peak.

The Yukon River at Whitehorse has dropped 36 centimetres from this summer’s peak. Lake Laberge has gone down 44.3 centimetres from the peak this summer.

The Southern Lakes and Laberge were stable this morning, says the flood report from the Emergency Measures Organization.

It says most tributaries are roughly stable, though the Takhini River is still rising.

Atlin Lake is a few centimetres above the 2007 peak water level, and is rising slowly but is expected to stabilize soon.

Some precipitation over the next 48 hours should keep water levels close to where they are through the week, says the report.

Community Services Minister John Streicker said in an Internet post last Friday that folks were working to maintain their dikes. The wind has been tough recently, says the post.

“Thanks as always to the incredible work of residents, volunteers and the flood response crews,” the minister writes.

“Even though this flood has been way higher than the previous record set in 2007, so far, working together we have managed to keep damage to a minimum.”

I guess Cons can go back to pretending there is no Global Climate crisis and their summer homes are safe again..... until next summer.

And for next year, after the rain and snow melt, they will be nicely swollen right from the start of the thaw.

Few weeks from now there will be more and more land between Marsh Lake homes and the lake.
Please lake dwellers, put in permanent barriers or jack your homes up to eliminate water damage.

Sand bagging is no long term fix.

The lake levels are NOT dropping. The daily hydrometric data (& looking out our window) shows it’s been going up the past 5 days here at Marsh Lake.
